there is no life shelf of a engine, it varies on how well its treated in its life and how well its maintained.
Example, my engine is about to hit 300k and still going strong

the life on an engine depends on various factors across its "hrs" and maintenance.
180,000ks on a b16a sound close to "rebuild" time.

depending on the engine and how ell maintained it was as in servicing etc... i'd say a good engine can go past 250 000 kms no problems... an average engine should see past 200 000kms no problems

Thats not accurate at all! :thumbdwn:
The life of a motor is not dependant on kms.
"Rebuild" time can come at any given time, be it on 1km or 200k+ kms.
The life of a motor is based purely on how well its been looked after and what type of driving its undergone.
Check the history on the motor if possible... but aside from that you'll need to pull it apart to see how well the "insides" have been preserved.

Thats true, you could have a well serviced engine that has covered alot of kms on the highway but never really had to do much work which would last alot longer compared to an engine driven around town with lots of stop/start driving where the engine probably wouldnt get a chance to warm up to proper operating temps 1/2 of the time.

true. if u drive it with no oil no coolant prob wont even last 50m
i think its safe to assume the AVERAGE motor with around 180km things usually start to need replacing, water pump, belts, seals etc. which is why u have major service every 100,000km
does anyone else find b16 burns ALOT of oil? say around a bottle in 2 or 3 weeks?? i find that my brothers delsol and also my neighbours burns around a bottle of oil in this time

i've seen heaps of b-series with over 200k or even 250k still goin fine.
dohc d-series tend to go 200-250k before they get a lil tired too
true. if u drive it with no oil no coolant prob wont even last 50m
there are plenty of youtube clips online proving otherwise :p

i guess it depends on how it is treated

how many km's on the engine?
when u say a bottle, a 5L bottle in a week?
in my b16a maybe 500-1000ml might get burnt depending how many km interval i change, but never more then that.

Ive seen a few do more than 250,000km
depends on too much info to determine life span
but if I was to get a B16A2 at a wreckers I'd at least replace:
Timing belt
cam seals
oil seal
water pump
tension pulley
maybe even the oil pump as well
Also a smoky motor sometimes will be due to it sitting unused like an import motor and the stem seals going hard and not doing their job that well anymore.

Sif rebuild @ 180,000kms
my old one had 220,xxx kms on it and was still hauling around.
Just needs to be regularly service and maintain well and any will last a long time

no motor should burn any amount of oil in a week.... let alone a bottle :S...
my motor spins to 9000rpms alot and doesnt use any oil... around 150 000 kms... doesnt blow smoke at all.. Im a mechanic so i service it everytime i get bored.

i had to dig up this classic from weezer:
http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2463
307,000kms on it now. I've never really had a problem. The main thing that went wrong was the waterpump failed at 280,000kms. But that was because a used a cheapo aftermarket water pump. But even a busted water pump wasn't enough to kill the motor. I drive the car pretty hard too and i take it to track days and drags ect.
once i tried to see how far i can get with only using 1st gear. I got from to city to richmond only using first. I think i would have hit rev limit about 30-40 times. and still, i couldnt blow it

^ PURE AWESOMENESS ROFL!
My EK4 (B16A2) has just over 215,000klms on it and still going strong! (TOUCH WOOD)
ek4_guy's has 230,000klms as far as i know - still going well.

222,222 kms no oil burning. 450kms to a tank 550 highway. no smoke besides vtec and backfire when shifting.
no coolant/oil leaks (besides residue from the sump).
b18c2. When i did major service. Looked like it was rebuilt before. Everything seemed new. Either that. Or its still factory. 98 model btw. Went to queensland and back a couple of times =].
Oh did i mention. factory clutch =D

Indeed - as I previously stated. The end user is responsible for the engines lifespan. Approaching 200,000ks is the designed lifespan for most Honda engines so anything more is good to see.

my old c32 in the legend was still going strong for about 265000km until i overheated it an inumerable amount of times but it still ran until i pulled it out of the car and replaced it with a c35
