Where does the aircon draw its air from?? I keep getting a fuel smell coming through the vents.

Its only just started doing this so its kind of weird, didnt even touch anything in the engine bay before it started.

I was thinking that it might be a fuel leak somewhere and it might be near where the air con is but i cant see any places where there could be possible leaks and i dont no where the air con draws its air from..........

By the way, im still getting the same amount of k's to a tank to before the smell started.

Check your charcoal canister and lines.

the air con draws it air from the compressor. I dont think it would be coming form the aircon, Maybe the petrol smells is coming from the back of car maybe you filled up to much???????. i dont it once and it there was a petrol smell in the car for a while than went away.... just check you fuel lines for the fuel filter than fi there fine not sure what it could be. but i always keep my vents closed because i dont lik pollution getting into the car and into my lungs you should keep them closed so the you cannot smeel the petrol

Yea ill have to check the fuel lines at the back....
I put a new fuel pump about 5 months ago, maybe something has come loose.

Is the charcoal canister any where near the tank? Its just a black plastic box isnt it? I may have over filled and its all gone into the canister, will have a look tonight........

Oh btw Frankie, i tried closing the vents, it did get rid of the smell a bit but its still coming through the other vents that i cant close lol, i got no choice but to sniff the petrol. Got to get it fixed asap, sucks on long drives........

Thanks!!

yeh check the charcoal canister but i dont think it would be that at all, also maybe when u changed the fuel pump you spilled a bit of petrol on the shell... what i mean by closing the vents to block the air from outside comin inside the car there is a button has pic of a car with an circular arrow make sure that it is ativated that will stop the pollution coming inside the car. Without have to block close the vents

Yea i dont really think its the charcoal canister, i havent ever overfilled.
I notice the smell more when i put my foot flat on the pedal, thats what made me think its a leak somewhere.
With the vents i did push that button to close them all off, still had the smell though so i guess that means the petrol is somewhere inside the car, probably at the fuel pump under the seat.

yeh its probaly under the seat clean it off, maybe the fuel pump wasnt tighten enough. Also try spraying the car with fragrance to get rid fo the fuel smell

the air con draws it air from the compressor.

No it doesn't. The air is drawn in from the vents that are just in front of the windscreen. The compressor compresses the aircon gas, which is expanded through the A/C core and air from the windscreen vents is passed through the cold core.

My guess is a leak from the fuel line or the charcoal canister, which causes the vapours to go past the windscreen vents when driving and then gets sucked into the aircon ducting.

i think theres fuel lines up against the firewall on your car check those and the charcoal canister is a round black thing in the engine bay and has a bunch of small lines going to it

I had a similar problem, one of my O-Rings on the injector gave way and was leaking fuel, might be that?

beat me to it ;)

check around your injectors while you've got your bonnet up.
start the car and maybe tug on the accelerator a few times.
try it with a cold engine or else the leak may evaporate too quickly.

I have checked the charcoal canister, seems to be empty......
Checked all fuel lines and pump and nothing seems to be leaking.

I havent checked the O-Rings yet, might have a look but i couldnt smell any fuel around the injectors.

I honestly think its a tuning problem after the weekend.
I notice the smell mostly when in 5th gear and the pedal is a fair way down..... I think the only reason is because im on good behaviour and im favouring 5th gear more often lol

Thanks for all the replies!!!

Check for holes in or around your exhaust pipes/extractor. As i had experience the same with a leaky exhaust. Check by spraying water around the pipes or run your hands to check if air is seaping thru
