Background:

Ok. After weeks of obssessive reading on OzHonda and a number of other recommended forums this is what I would like done on my car.

I understand that performance would be limited on my D16Y4 unless I have intentions to either: Turbo-charge it, mini-me conversion or do a B16B (FTW!) transplant. I'd probably do a SRI conversion with a cat back and new muffler somewhere down the line, budget permitting.

So passing that, handling performance and visual appeal is next on the list.

I've done some small little mods here and there, replacing the cluster with a GLi model for the tacho; Did a DIY on the tail lights as an EK9 replica and ordered some OEM cup holder and arm rest from a member here.

I currently have some dodgy CSA 15" wheels with 195/55 Pirelli Dragon on so I might spice it up with some Koni Shocks and King Springs with a 1 - 1.5" drop.

Am also considering a change of wheels (still thinking whether to go 15" or 16") - would this warrant a conversion of the rear drums to discs? Buddy Club is on my hit list but they don't come in bronze - only white (which suits my Black EK pretty well I suppose?)

Thanks for all the super-useful information around the forum and the stuff that I've been reading are gold.

I'll post some pictures up on my ride thus far and update it as I go.

Now's hoping to Rudd money coming in soon!

Cheers.

Turbo-charge it, mini-me conversion or do a B16B (FTW!) transplant - Consider a h22 conversion, torque > Kw. The h22 is soooo under rated and i know if i was going to do an engine transplant this is what i would go. Also cheaper for a half cut than a b16b!!

Am also considering a change of wheels (still thinking whether to go 15" or 16") - I would advive to go 16's. I went 15's, which are fine but to fill the guard its difficult as the car has to be so low to the ground.

Would this warrant a conversion of the rear drums to discs? Most likely as i guess you will be driving around quicker.

Top brake pads > Bigger brakes

But yes i guess you would want to convert your rear drums as they cannot disperse heat well.

Also consider doing a diy on your headlights instead of spending ****'s on oem, evn though they are sexay

ay man nice car got the same and same colour. Its going to cost you a lot of money to do all of that are u jst going to aim for looks or engine performance. For rear sway bar OEM 100 percent. also Am also considering a change of wheels (still thinking whether to go 15" or 16") - would this warrant a conversion of the rear drums to discs. go for 16s not you dotn neeed to do a rear disc conversion. just get slotted ont he front that will make a big difference

any pics :D

yea x2, the price of oem headlights are rediculous, lol, sif they cost 1100 to get, ffs I can get parts from japan, same street, ended up with ek4 lights for nearly a 1/3 of that price... lol

and for sway bar, go oem ek4 forsure :D

I suppose I wouldn't be going around that quick considering an engine conversion is really out of my budget, skillset and time for now. Boo.

Finding the right 16" is SOOOOOOOOOO difficult. Patience is the key IMO.

Saw your build thread Gio and it's awesome. Haven't got any updates recently hey?

Which is why I'm only focussing on handling and visual mods.

RE EK9 headlights: Saw the DIY thread by EK94R - doesn't look too bad at all but it looks like heaps of effort LOL

http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv308/neo_phase/09Car-01.jpg

No more cup holding between the thighs

http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv308/neo_phase/09Car-06.jpg

So what I did was use my trusty little blow torch to cut a hole in the arm rest compartment, and run my stereo cable from the front of my head unit down under the centre console and push it back into the arm rest compartment for my iPod.

http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv308/neo_phase/09Car-07.jpg

And with the remote control for the iPod I can just hang it out like that for easy access.

> Rear sway bar (still weighing between OEM or Whiteline)

You will require a sub-frame brace when using > 14mm rear sway bars as the mounting points are a known weakness.

Might as well get an ASR brace and ITR 22mm rear bar package in one hit and save some cash.

suspension alignment is probably the cheapest and most effective upgrade possible.

Negative 2-2.5 degrees front camber, negative 1-1.5 degrees rear.

Throw some sticky rubber on the rims and viola!

Wheel size is more to do with visual appeal than economics.

Nick.

@ nd55: Thanks for the tips Nick. Will look into the ASR + ITR package.

@ EK1.6LCIV: Thanks mate. I hopped into the car this morning and realised that it's not actually that accessible with the remote being there. I'll probably see if I can extend the remote cable so I can stick it right below the head unit.

@ Mirage: Got it from a fellow OH member for $60. The cupholder isn't exactly huge so don't expect to put your Large Boost Juice in there.

if going for a rear sway bar, id also consider the beaks subframe reinforcement kit. Do you plan to track the car?

Engine mods, mini-me would be a nice little bump in power, not a huge increase, & i believe also a mini-me also raises compression slightly. but, because the D16Y4 is a very unique & different engine, its not just a matter of fitting a Vtec head & plugging in its ecu.

Because the Y4s wiring harness/loom is completely different to OBD2 hondas. I would like to upgrade my Y4s performance, so im looking at using a wiring loom from a USDM '00 Civic (D16Y7), & its dizzy. Because the D16Y7 is OBD2a/b (2000) this will allow me to use a OBD2a/b > OBD1 conversion harness to use a chipped OBD1 ecu. not exactly cost effective, but will make the Y4 a much easier platform to modify.

EK1.6LCIV
07-04-2009, 08:49 AM
the beaks would be great if it was like the cusco and wasnt lower than the stock subframe (it will break off, they may as well of called them breaks, lol...)

upgrading to a cusco item or carbing item would be advisable as they are a one piece design with no weak as endings that will break off :D and alot cheaper :D

Just took a side profile picture this morning - nothing fancy as you can see. Stock everything except for the CSA wheels that I'm dying to get rid off. Will probably spray paint it over the next few weekends and see how it'll turn out. A 1.5" drop is definitely warranted as well.

So I was finger itchy and decided to put on some effects. If anyone's got some high res photoshoots that they want to enhance or beautify, shoot me a msg and I'll be happy to work on them when I have the time. :)

Yes its easy to fit the shift boot 4 screws then thats it, and gear knob.. its just a knob you twist it and comes off the old one and new one twist it again.

and for the lip things he has here is a list that u can get

It's super easy.

Undo 6 screws on the centre console as pictured (3 on each side), remove the console and underneath there will be 2 screws on the shift boot. Just remove and replace!

Lip Kips = $160 per piece

Wow really? I didn't know it came without air standard.

A search on Drive appears that the 1997 CXi model has air as a extra for $2000+. Mine's a 2000 model so it may have been standard then or the previous owner must have put it in.

So I've spent the last 2 weeks doing some DIY painting on the lip kits and grille. Unfortunately due to the blistering cold weather in Canberra and the fact that I don't have a closed-up garage the paintwork came out not quite to the standard I was expecting.

Nevertheless I'm still happy that it's done now so here are some pics! Thanks to another OH member for helping with the install.

First the sanding (800 - 1500 - 2000), then 2 coats of primer:
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv308/neo_phase/CarUpdates-01.jpg

http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv308/neo_phase/CarUpdates-02.jpg

Then 2 coats of paint - mixed from Autobarn:
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv308/neo_phase/CarUpdates-05.jpg

http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv308/neo_phase/CarUpdates-09.jpg

Finally today I put the microsuede bought from Spotlight to good use. Didn't have time to do the door trim so I started off with the arm rest:

http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv308/neo_phase/CarUpdates-11.jpg

Let me know what you guys think!

I also managed to remove my hatch trim and removed the rear wiper. Wasn't too hard but I need to find a rubber plug for the hole and find out how to remove the wiper motor as you can't just unplug the wiring attached to it. So I put everything back together LOL.

Hey bro just checking in. Car is looking good. Are the lips matt black?

Cheers. Well they're meant to be coded NH-592P from Autobarn's paint mixer but I believe they have chosen a wrong variation of that. Apparently there's over 50 types of NH-592P on their system and they just took a shot at one of it according to the car model and year.

Not sure why it's happening and it was taking too much effort to drain/dry/fix/seal them from the inside so I went with some new ones.

Will run some water over them later this evening (getting alarm installed in my car!) to see if it happens again. If it does, I'd be stumped fo sho!

@ Gio: I know it's painfully annoying. Hopefully the new lights will solve it!

@ underbelly: Apparently the EK9 taillights have a darker tint on the mid-section where the reverse/indicator lights are. I can't really tell the difference myself cause the old taillights are f**ked LOL. EK1 taillights wouldn't have a hole/socket/bulb on them.

hey mate, do you have any pics of the rear lip installation? am i suppose to drill in holes?

if its a OEM rear lip itl have all holes and necessary mounting clips, straight bolt on. If its aftermarket n doesnt have holes on the lip, time to get your drill out

neo_phase
23-05-2009, 12:09 PM
Raztaz is spot on there. Only drill your Lips though as you can easily screw into the bumper.

Just make sure there's someone who can help you out with aligning the lip onto the bumper and mark the spots where you need to drill.

Hi mate, good work with the conversion! - Liking the door trims with red, always makes a different atmosphere.

With the rear bumper, if it's OEM Honda, it has marks on the inside of the bumper made by the factory moulder as to where to drill for the CTR rear lip.

Its a very small bump on the (usually) dirty surface on the inside of the rear bar - at the exact centre of where to drill, and its surrounded but a roughened circle area.

I got to putting my CTR lip on, and was wondering how to get it lined up exactly - then put it under my big spot lamp to discover these marked-areas!

Cheers, Dan.

Bumpers are OEM.

Lips are reps. The rep lips doesn't come with any markings or whatsoever. The OEM bumpers do. However good luck with trying to align the lips on the bumper as tight as you could.

yeh ive been looking at it on ebay and wasnt sure if it was one or the other or both were needed. did u get yours on ebay too? from the US?

Yes it's from US. I believe you can easily get a rubber seal and screws for the plug if you want to as paying over $70 for the plug and kit is CRAZY! Though I did it and end up spending hours justifying it to the missus. And yes it's from eBay US.

Got my Osram Nightbreakers about 2 days ago. Managed to pop them in for a test last night.

On the left you have the Philips BlueVision and on the right is the Osram Nightbreaker:
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv308/neo_phase/Car270509-01.jpg

It's definitely brighter than the BlueVision albeit the yellow-ish tint that I didn't like.

Here's a mid-range shot:
http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv308/neo_phase/Car270509-05.jpg

Also, I reckon the Philips Xtreme Power is better than this Nightbreaker.

I'm really considering going HID now. I've adjusted the BlueVision to a perfect height now that gives me the best distance/range but it is still not as bright as I would like it to be, though I wouldn't part with the whiteness of it.

Anyone with any experiences of getting defected for HIDs? I'm just thinking 6000k like what Liquidsound is selling.

simbadda54

Hey man, u dont have to worry about getting defected from having hids in canberra. They wont open ur beonet so they wont know what u got. If u dont get a ridiculous colour ie above 8000k then it should be fine. I used to have HI/LOs but the ballast died so just chucked in another ebay kit. Go hi/lo just to be safe but wont matter in act

yea the kits on most are rubbish, might be lucky to get 3 months of use out of them before a ballast dies and u go back to ur old globes

I only spent a lil, was nice for the hills, had disadvantages tho, such as having to aim the lights down to be less offensive to other motorists

the kits are easy to diy, the odds of a defect are slim unless they open you bonnet and find the boxes (just hide them) and the hi/lo poping of the blubs is a dead give away (as they are loud on the h4 hi/lo kits, lol) dont go above 6k, 8k is blue enough to be noticed

I enjoyed them, and if the ballast didnt die in the ass I wouldve still ran em

Unfortunately I might have to stall all planned mods on my car now because of the bad news I got from my landlord yesterday. Will have to shift my focus onto the housing sector now and if I'm lucky, maybe some spare change will get me a part or two down the line.

Cause I don't plan to have a swap unless the absolute deal comes to light. I don't mind doing the basic mods now as I can easily part out on them.

This would also set me up for a cost efficient turbo mod should I choose to in the future. :)

Hey man where does that draw the cold air from?

Chris if you look at the lower part of the box (circled) there's a piping that goes behind the front bumper and you attached the air horn that sits at the same level as the bottom fender.

http://i694.photobucket.com/albums/vv308/neo_phase/P1030553-1-1.jpg

You'll have to remove the entire stock intake and the resonator box to fit this though.

Any gains man>?

What was the cost?

neo_phase
22-06-2009, 11:59 AM
Revs on the lower-end is much more smoother and evident with some noticeable gains through the range.

It also gives a nice deep sound when you go medium-hard on the accelerator. It's definitely taking more air in and all I need is to pass them out efficiently with some new headers and exhaust!

Cost is exxy! Got it for around $640 pick-up price from JDM Yard during the June special.

I've definitely paid a premium for the stock look and to be RTA compliant while having cold air feeding into the engine.

Hey mate just use epoxy to re-attached the arm rest. You'll need to apply some pressure from the other side of the arm rest to make it stay. epoxy is good as it's construction grade. It is however quite a permanent solution so it would be quite difficult to remove later on.
