Should I let Honda Service change my brake pads??

Hi all,

I've got a 2005 Civic Gli and in need to change both front and rear brake pads.

Should I leave to the Honda service guys to change them and leave them as OEM parts or should I get something else.

They quoted me - $235 front.
$251 rear.
I'm assuming that this price includes labour.

Bought a set of front and rear Bendix General CT pads and just DIY'd it. Pretty easy cause of the DIY write-up. That was great. Took a while cause I had to bleed it too. It had air in both the rear.

Saved a lot on money too.
Pads - $196 with 20% off repco = $155
Honda Brake Fluid = $7.95
Brake expander tool = $24.00

i seem to recall that when changing pads over

- the disks/rotors should be machined so the new pads don't wear out as fast.. ??

No, you don't need to machine it unless it is warped.

If there is enough gunk, your steering wheel will vibrate a bit when you apply the brakes. If you don't have that vibration, then you don't have enough gunk on your disc to warrant machining. :)

mm.. i never had that vibrating sensation when applying brakes.. but it was a major service and they changed heaps of stuff on my old EK.. so i dunno don't really care.. i just remember it cost me $1400 LOL

In my experience i have found if i use anything but genuine brake pads i get squeaking and noisy brakes.

Has anyone else had this experience?

the squeaking noise is usually from higher temp. rated pads. different material used than OEM pads. OEM is more for the everyday commuter designed for comfort, reliability and less noise.

Pads do squeel. You can buy something which is called "anti-squeel". Its a lubricant you apply around where the piston and other mating areas rub. Some brake pad kits come with it included (my oem ones did).

hey good tips in here, but does anyone now what brake fluid to use in a honda civic 89. I know mixing dot 3 and 4 together is a no no.
