View Full Version : Should I demodify my Civic before trading it in?

Basically the time has come to move on to another car, but I was wondering if I am better off demodifying my Civic 06 VTiL auto before taking it in to the Mitsubishi dealership for a valuation, or if I should take it in 'as is'. Realistically I am just worried that they will think it's a hoon car and even reduce the value of the car as a result.

In terms of appearance/parts, I am not fishing for a sale but to answer this topic Q I will give basic overview. I didn't do anything tacky or stick on lots of stickers- it's just a plain replica Mugen bodykit and genuine factory painted Mugen wing all professionally fitted. The other things inside are like an aftermarket sound system from Lifestyle, Apexi RSM, K&N SRI & Mu HIDs done by BK, iPod integration kit, etc.. (everything has been discussed elsewhere on OzHonda :) )

Anyway, I was offered a pretty low trade in from one dealer, and I am wondering if I should just demodify it with the help of mates, or if I should try to get a better trade in on the Civic 'as is'.

On another note there are a few chips on the paint and the drivers door was keyed previously and hence it is a bit visible :( The dealer said it would cost a few grand to fix it.

Any thoughts? And no I am not selling the car privately nor selling the parts- I just need to know this beforehand because if I rock up with a modified Civic one week and then show up the week later with a demodified Civic, it may lead to a few raised eyebrows when I say the car has been stock as a rock!

Bro your prob better of trying to trade it or sell it to a used car dealer on parramata road, like Bluey's or someone who stocks cars like yours cause your always gonna get FA at a dealer regardless!

Remove the parts man. They are worth more to enthusiasts than to dealerships.

In other words you will be more likey to get more for selling the parts seperate.

Talking crap is a part of their job.

When buying a car: car dealers will point out every little blemish, make you think your own car is worthless, then low ball you.

But when selling: They'll point out all the good things, ask you to look past the blemishes and pretend to make you a good deal.

Go with a private sale. Demod and fix what is worth fixing. Set a realistic price, stick to that price. Someone will buy.

hey mate,

i got offered 5k with my fully modded ek from dealership, i decided to demod it.

went back to the same place with an oem civic, after the demod, and they offered me 7k

sold the car privately stock for 8.5k and the rest of the mod's for 9k.

its all bout the effort you put into selling your stuff (Y)

mind you i still have a CF bonnet and a ej8 oem front bar in my garage... things might sell things might not..

I work at a dealership

I suggest you de-mod your vehicle and have it in stock condition (all parts + your HIDS) to get the best value on your civic.

The dealer will consider the condition of the car, obviously any slighest scratch damage etc will be taken into consideration.

You'll be surprised what the value of your civic will be worth, could be a positive or negative note for yourself.

If the dealer believes it will generate profit it will either wholesale it or sell it on their yard.

BTW, its always better to sell privately as you will jack a crappy return on the trade and you'll get jipped in the sale of the new vehicle believing you got a good deal

Im also looking for a new car and will do the same, although don't have as many mods as yourself

Thanks for the advice guys. The real challenge with the wing is I used to have an OEM spoiler (which I still have) so I plan to put that back on if I can. Sounds easy right? Well the Honda OEM spoiler has 5 holes (4 normal ones plus 1 for wiring) but when I replaced with the Mugen wing, the 5th hole wasn't used so it was filled with a grommet and sealed using windscreen sealant. If I can get the Honda spoiler back on then that's great, but what I'm worried about is if halfway during the process we realise that the grommet is unable to be removed.... then we're in trouble.

Anyway yes I've decided to demod everything except the Mugen bodykit which is too hard to remove (and possibly covering up a scuff here or there^^). It's also been glued on in the back so it'll be very very difficult I think.

I'm not sure if I want to remove the RSM or the intake. Last time when I got the RSM installed something happened and caused the computer to go all screwy and make my car stall whilst driving! (It's an automatic but I believe it had something to do with the air flow mix and my K&N typhoon intake causing problems for the airflow sensor).

Also your body kit stuck on with sikaflex and yeah thats a hassle to remove but your wing shouldnt be. The grommet should be easy to bash/pop/and worst case drill out for your wing. Returning your car to stock shouldnt be a hassle for your airflow sensor. Just snip the wires of your RSM as close to ECU as possible and tape off the wires individually. All pretty simple stuff.

Ended up deciding to just demod the RSM, wing and intake. Left everything else (kit-wise) and the OEM spoiler on the car. I feel sad and not wanting to sell my first car... but just not practical having two :(

always part out a car, and try and sell privately. stealers will rape u without lube and love it.
unless u somehow tastelessly modded the car, then it should be fine to sell privately, u need to wade thru the bullshit, but its always better than trade price.
i guess this is a lesson to u now, dont overspend on cars, unless u plan on keeping forever. i learnt the hard way, but ive reached a stage in life now where i will not own another new car again, nor will i own an expensive car. unless someone steals it, or it cant be fixed, thats the only time ill ever buy another car
