View Full Version : Gen 3 Odyssey tyre wear - std setup

Just had the Ody serviced (30,000kms) and I knew the tyres (OE Dunlop 230) had worn a fair bit but figured on another 5,000 from them.

Got a nasty shock when the service guys announced all 4 were shot and declared them unroadworthy.

The rears (which had been there for 20,000) were completely chamfered off on the inside. Scarily so in fact - down to the steel belts. The front were better but down to the treadwear indicators.

Most of my driving is long distance (500km trips to Brisbane or Rockhampton) and fully loaded (2 adults, 3 kids plus luggage). Have towed a trailer on a few trips - I'm guessing that sitting low and the associated wheel camber has caused this excessive wear.

So my question is what mileage have you guys got from your std setups?

And the guys with lowered - I can only imagine you should watch the inside of your tyres carefully!
Or do the camber kits you guys put on help with this problem?? Should I consider this option?? - I do not want to lower my car (live in the country)

Going to get a roof box (Thule X1) so will be putting less in the back - hoping this will help centralise the load a bit.

I must say I am a little dissappointed with this issue - if I wanted a car that chews through rear tyres I would have bought a Commy wagon again.....I would have thought a sophisticated car maker like :honda: would be on top of this sort of thing.

Dare I say that I've seen many brand new cars which simply have poor alignment from new, generally camber doesn't wear excessively.
Although not an Ody I have -2 degrees all round and good even wear. Incorrect toe is the biggest culprit here I suspect so I'd just get an alignment done.

Had an alignment done with the new tyres - looking at the report they haven't changed anything on the rear.
I'm confident it's not a toe wear issue - there was no feathering elsewhere on the tread.

Look at a lowered or loaded up Ody and there's a tonne of camber there....

i only got 20k out of my 20 inch tyres fronts wore out on inside edges badly, rears are still about 50% but are a little feathered on inside edges

what do you guys do with your tires???

Currently clocked 30,000km on my BS RE001's, and the thread pattern is still good on all 4 tires with no uneven wear, hoping to get maybe 40 to 45 k before having to change.

Ride is lowered, but I have both front and rear camber kits and had the toe and cambers aligned, so I guess the camber kit and proper alignment are paying off.

I expected 40k or so out of the OE Dunlops. Will monitor the Yokohama's (A-drive AA01) more closely to see whether it was mainly the tyres.

As I posted earlier, most of my kms are high speed with a full load on Qld country roads (ie rough, coarse chip seal) in high temperatures so probably the harshest environment around for tyres.....

the main issue is yr odyssey always fully loaded in addition with towing. check the rear tire next time after fully loaded with people, at least -5 degree camber out at the back even by yr bare eye. invest a set of rear camber kit and will save you some money for tires in the future.
