hey guys,

im really confused about the d16y5 engine in 96 EK VTI CIVIC. Is this a VTEC engine?

the EG VTI CIVIC d16y1 engine .. this is a SOHC VTEC, whats the difference between EG VTI and EK VTI.

they both have the VTEC solinoid

for me, if I concentrate enough on the tacho, I can notice the revs start to climb slightly faster when its in vtec but the cross over is absolutely non existent! whats a js racing intake look like on an EG?

got a d16y8 and the vtec you can hear is obvious kicks in around 5300 for mine im sure yours should be the same. the intake makes a big difference if you want to hear it.

I think the Y5 changes from 12 valve to 16 valve when it hits about 3k RPM from what i remember

I have a 96 civic vti too but it's a sedan and i have the d16y4 series engine. No vtec at all. I didn't know that they made vti models without vtec

err...They didnt. for the EK the VTi was the sedan..the hatch didnt have a "VTi" here. The VTi DID come wit ha VTEC engine. The D16Y4 came in the Gli Sedans.

yeah, not sure about the kick in point, but it essentially works on 3 valves per cylinder before vtec (1 intake and 2 exhaust. the 2nd intake opens very slightly to prevent buildup of fuel or other things) and switches to 2 intake and 2 exhaust when it kicks in, as well as a slightly higher lift..

Yea, i know, i checked out the specs as well but when i looked under the hood, it was a d16y4 engine. Baffling.... engine swap by the previous owner maybe? Maybe that's why it was cheaper

or maybe its a GLi with a VTi badge on it. why would someone go to the trouble of swapping in a d16y4, youd have to change the engine harness aswell...

but it does seem legit, oem alloy rims, front cup holders, middle console arm rest, rear spoiler. Just no vtec =(

i have cup holders, spoiler, honda rims and all that little nifty stuff in my GLi (you can even get GLi sedans with a sun roof), takes like 10min to put in all that extra interior stuff, straight screw in. the GLi and VTi were the same car essentially with a diff motor. Prob a VTi wannabe GLi. IF they really did an engine swap (which is time and money), why would they downgrade

i got a d16y5 and can hear the vtec kick in. it kicks in around 5500rpm. got a SRI though, before that, you could barely hear it at all.
