So, After I put in a K&N panel filter I noticed the stock air box/intake seems to be of a very complex and restrictive configuration (there's like bends and resonators all over the joint..)

Are the any write ups on what unnecessary bits can be removed to gain more performance out of my panel filter or are all the weird bends and resonators there for a reason?

The max you can do to a stock airbox for max airflow is

- Change to Aftermarket filter that is more free flowing
- Remove stock resonator and install a direct CAI feed to it
- Change the stock intake arm to a metal piping.

Thats the most you could do I guess.

and after all this whats the, "benefit vs effort required" ratio?

If its a minimal gain I might as well leave the stock intake alone..

well it shouldnt cost more than $150 max for all parts inckuding filter.

I guess benefit wise.

- It will look stock so not as easily defectable.
- It will definately allow more air in better comapred to stock, stock has quite a few resonators
- You will get a nicer induction noise
- Nice and Cheap , yet effective.

Just do it...
You'll be happy with the look and the sound if not the power increase...

meh can't be ****ed fiddling with the resonator box during winter lol, I might just wack on the 3A racing pod I have at home using some PVC piping I got from bunnings, just for kicks lol, hopefully engine bay will remain cold enough and I won't loose too much power..

LOL - You just talked yourself out of the doing the airbox mod! Which would be the same amount of effort as installing your PVC piping etc. Why bother asking in the first place?

I've run both SRI and an airbox. There is definately more noticeable lower end/off the line power with the airbox and cold air feed setup. SRI sounds good, but sucks in hot air when stationary - off the line performance is worse than when utilising the airbox. SRI with a custom partition with cold air feed is the best of both worlds, but requires the most 'effort'.

Seriously, the time required to modify the stock airbox and remove resonator and run cold air feed isn't that much. But hey if you can't be bothered to put in a little effort, be like the other 75% of modifiers and change the setup for a loss, instead of improving.

*Replacement K&N panel filters can be had for around $50 online.
*Removal of resonator = FREE (-20mins of your time to remove front bar and res).
*Airbox 'gutting' (removing webbing/ribs/sound deadening cloth inside box with grinder) = FREE (-10mins)
*Cold air feed: You can cut off the pipe that feeds the airbox (from resonator box) and flare out the end with a hot air gun = FREE (-20mins).

To go further again you can create another cold air feed (about $30 from Autobarn or $15 for PVC piping/joiners and glue) using the hole in the chassis (where the resonator box feed was). Using the new piping run feed from the inner guard again up to the side of the box (cutting a hole in the box and 'plastic welding'/glue/sikaflex pipe onto box) and paint. Stealth!

Do yourself a favour and read Autospeed!

or u can use a dc2 box with a pod filter to suit inside and a custom CAI piping
that all cost me around 70 bucks on my old eg

thanks for the comments guys, don't forget I already have a K & N panel filter in there..

u guys REALLY noticed "performance" gains when changing these around? i haven't noticed nething except a very loud sound (i love) from my aem sri

drill holes at the bottom of the box

started with that under advice from another member.. yeah it worked but was ugly as all shit... may as well jigsaw out the entire bottom of the airbox... only good if you have a spare though.

look how weird it looks:

my other mod was this, which allowed me to put a pod into the fender as per normal cai setups:

Haha, yeah, pretty ugly! Why not just get a full CAI system?
