Found a nice package engine, gearbox, and wiring lying around for a cheap price, the only problem is, is that the engine has low compression. What might this mean in terms of rebuilding, (parts required, worthwhile, etc)

low compression usually means something regarding valves, piston rings or head gasket isn't it?
either way something isn't sealing

its soo cheap its nearly worth it, but can a b16a2 be had for around 2k tho?

Is the compression low on all cylinders? If so then that would be a bit unusual, especially if they were all reasonably close in psi (or if the engine just has a very low compression ratio?).

Maybe the compresion test isn't being done corectly, e.g. cranking speed may be too low, or maybe the throttle plate wasn't opened during the test?...

hahahah

Seriously though Ryan: As JohnL said if the compression is low on all cylinders (still measuring close values in reference to each other) one would think the test isn't being performed correctly.

Whereas if 1, 2 or 3 cylinders are far different from each other, then you'd assume rings are gone, valves aren't seating correctly or head/gasket failure.

If i was in your position and had the time (not in a mad rush to have it done) to build/rebuild a motor on the side, i wouldn't hesitate to do a B20vtec. Seeing as the bottom end on the motor you're enquiring about sounds like 'its possibly seen better days'... and let's face it - you're probably going to spend the same amount of money reco'ing that motor as you would for the getting a B20 block and B16 head done anyways! Personally, i wouldn't go through with an engine swap unless the one going in was 'practically new' - otherwise i feel it kinda defeats the purpose of doing the swap (save;power gains over old motor etc). Just my thoughts.

the company selling it got the engine delivered as an engine with low compression from ethier japan, china, indo, wherever they honestly have no clue, its a parts motor to them atm, lol

I was basically going to get a vin and order in a mass amount of new oem gear to make it a new engine, maybe some cams and some pistons

Im in no mad rush and have a b18cr budget to work with atm...
