Well im going to go get my bike licence very soon, i know having a 600 on my l's isnt probably the smartest thing if i get pulled over but, you only have your l's for 3 months.. so im leaning towards a CBR600RR instead of the 250RR.. Can someone give me some info on how much maintanance and what not will cost? common problems? or even a decent other bike.. pref. Honda. but all is appriciated :)

D4rk4n63l
23-04-2009, 09:27 PM
you need to be on LAMS bike until you are on your full license.. so its 15 months minimum, not just 3 months on L

F20C
23-04-2009, 09:29 PM
oh well that sucks, why is my mate off his l's after like 4 or so months lol? or is he doing a shifty?

D4rk4n63l
23-04-2009, 09:34 PM
You can have your 'P' after 3 months.. but still restricted to riding LAMS approved bikes
Then after 12 months you can have your full license and go buy the bike you really want :)

F20C
23-04-2009, 09:38 PM
well i guess that isnt too bad, and thats the same in every state im assuming?

D4rk4n63l
23-04-2009, 09:44 PM
in NSW at least.. but I assume it would be the same for VIC, I heard rules are changing though.. longer 'P' period or something like that

An RVF400 will eat up any 250cc bike, and its learner legal. To be honest I dont think it should be...

It wont hold a straight line on any 600cc once they climb... but it will lift the front wheels on acceleration in first few gears, you sound like you have only ridden a bike or two in past (or never), so dont get a 600cc, you will likely drop it. 400's are light and dont feel as restricted in movement as most 250's ive been on. Great bike. Its ballsy through midrange. And its more than enough for any provisional rider for years of fun. Spend the dough on a used one with a nice kit (you want the looks) and you wont regret it as they hold value well.

Ill tell you now, if you decide to go 600cc SBK, and try and run from an undercover hwy patrol you are likely going to get caught or killed. Seen it plenty of times.

went riding with a few mates about 2 weeks ago to bondi, we all pulled in a petty station me and about 8 other LAMS bikes

a black rvf400 rocks up dressed in a tyga kit and having the exact red bull design on it... i dare say that this is his bike, it was orgasmic. If your stuck on your p's for 3 years something that looks like this is well worth it, prices of LAMS cbrs are only going to rise, you might as well buy something like this, it looks better, sounds better and rides better

rodericb

...and 73% of statistics are made up.

You can get yourself into an awful lot of trouble on a 600. Most CBR250's are older than the learners who are actually buying them and are pretty crappy. Is better to get a VTR250, learn to ride and get to Philip Island and overtake 600's around the corners in that 15 months of L/P plates and then get a 600 which you'll actually be able to use.

F20C

go for the 250 and if you get a good one they are quite quick i started on a 250 and went up to a VFR400 mine has mild work done and keeps up with 600s but having said that i am glad i didnt go straight to the 600 or 900 like i was going to do, i would have got caught or dropped it for sure! just get used to riding around go to a few track days and move up when its both legal and your ready.

Twincam16
26-04-2009, 06:54 PM
Good idea... just think about an undercover cop pulling up behind u, running your plates and then doing a random breath test on you, what do you do? Take off and leave them with your details, or stop and get busted...

Ull get done regardless - go for a legal bike

Bit more expensive, but can maul a 250 in the straight line or in bends with a good rider.
De-restricted.

I'm kind of leaning towards looks, not so much power now.. It would be good to have the power there but its a bike im sure its quicker then most cars lol. i'll check out the ducati now and post up what i think.

EDIT:: the monster 620 doesnt look half bad, but i still like the CBR250RR lol.

I just got my L's, about 3 months ago or so...

I was thinking of jumping straight to an r6 haha ~ suicide ftw.

But I think we will enjoy it more when the right time comes.. 250 is fast enough, I was riding and 40 felt like 80 to me.. and I'm a natural adrenaline junky haha..

Plus, imagine all the new models that will be out by then..

Meh, getting my hands on a 250rr soon grey and black ~ sexy as **** anyways.

Sorry to bring up an old thread.

I am thinking of getting a motorcycles license sometime in the next couple of months.

I want to find out what are a few options for a good beginner bike which isn't punching a hole in my pocket.

As i've read that you guys think that 250's are not worth it due to inflated prices cause of the LAMS sh1t, but the least i've seen for these sort of bikes with decent used mileage are around the $7k mark.

Purpose is to use it for a daily to work and uni then back home once i move out to the west. Travel would be around 45mins to the city or so.

You reckon i should go for a CBR250R or VRF400? Hyosung GT250R? Any others?
Pros/Cons on the bikes you suggest please, year, make/model and price range its approx.

Can you also suggest some good 2nd hand or private sites which have cheaper prices cause i can't seem to find any.

Also how much normally to get it "ON ROAD"?

Your opinions please. Thanks
Darren

So i've heard they are bang for buck but not having much luck searching hahahaha

i know with cbr250rr looking around online i only can seem to find older models mainly 1989-early 90's models and they are going for $5.5k +.

With hyosung gt250R can get it merely under 5k brand new almost.

Hyosung bikes fall apart....

CBR250RR are a good bike but take into consideration its roughly a 15yo bike so many out there would have been in accos. Make sure you dont buy a bent one.

Another option is the Kawasaiki Ninja which is about 7-7.5k new, but that thing has a shitty riding position and exhaust note imo...

Gutless as well... basically just a gpx250 with new some new fairings (which ive heard cost almost $2k to replace)

On a good note, that bike has been a top seller in Aus for couple years now, so a huge influx of used ones, with low km's and warranty also, at a good price

F20C

I think you do have to wait 2 months.. beats waiting to go for your p's now by far.. when i went for my licence i had to wait almost 6 months after i turned 18 due to it being so packed lol. I got lucky one day and called and got in on my birthday which was really lucky lol.. So i guess you could try the same and keep on their back about it so you get an earlier appointment?

if your in the area go past a1 road and race, tell Rob i sent ya down he's got plenty of cbr's/ninja's/gsf500's...

Im not sure if you've seen one of our bikes, its a custom white/lime 250 ninja but modified; r6 rear, matte black/lime green lip wheels, gixxer fairings, ZX10 Ffront and so on..

he told me he's building something similar to it and gonna sell it cheap so ask him before its sold!

Nah GS500F should be alright, its weight might be a concern for the smaller noobs compared to some other bikes as its around 40kilos heavier than a CBR250. Good torque though

Well you wont get either one of those for the revs, besides revving to get anywhere is pointless if you are using it everyday in traffic. Kaw 250r will rev to 13/14k and the Gs500 with its bigger motor will rev to around 11k. Both should be friendly on street.

Well you wont get either one of those for the revs, besides revving to get anywhere is pointless if you are using it everyday in traffic. Kaw 250r will rev to 13/14k and the Gs500 with its bigger motor will rev to around 11k. Both should be friendly on street.
yeh, so tempted for the GS500f but will see how it goes when i sit on one to get the feel of it and see which one is more suitable for my bodyshape.

I'm only 5'7-8 and around 70kg mark.

Well its not directly relating to either cbr bike's or getting a license, its just chatting, this thread has been good, so lets keep it on topic. If you want to discuss meetups or licenses keep it to pm or the allocated meet (http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114191) thread
