Hi all,

I recently bought a 10 year old Civic Ek1 GLi. As some parts like the tail pipe are made of mild steel, they rust quickly. My mechanic said this is common for any 10 year old car. I am however aware that the rust can start to spread and eat away at the metal eventually.

1) I would like to some suggestions on how to get the underside rust professionally removed. One of my mates suggested sandblasting. Where can I do that and how much might it cost?

2) To prevent future rust, I've read that some cars are painted with a black paint on the entire underside. Is this the best way? Where can I get that done? What would the cost be?

Thanks.

If the rust on the exhaust has already perforated through, consider having the rusted sections replaced through cutting and welding.

For the underbody, remove as much free rust as you can, apply rust convertor to stop the rusting for spreading further, and then coat over with an underbody protective paint (it is usually like a thick tar/urethane paint).
