Hi All,

Just wondering if it would be okay to top up my brake fluid reservoir with just DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid without knowing what's already in there?

Read how the only differences are the boiling points.

In reading that i'm assuming it would be okay just to put some DOT 4 in if i was to already have DOT 3 in the reservoir?

Help much appreciated.

Cheers

You can add DOT4 to DOT3. The only one that you cannot mix is DOT5. Just take a little bit out of your brake resevoir using a teaspoon or a syringe and put it in a little plastic container (jello cup). Add an equal amount of your DOT4 brake fluid in the new bottle into that container and mix it. If it doesn't gel up, you are safe in topping up. If you have DOT5 in the car, it will gel up.

There is also DOT5.1, and that is mixable with DOT 3 and 4.

Oh okay, thanks for that info.

I'll try taking some out with a syringe and mixing the two in something seperate.

What kind of gelling am i looking for? like thickening up?

Yup, thickening up and turning into jelly/mush.
