Hi Guys,

Just wondering - for those out there who is on Full Cover Insurance.
Im sure they will ask you to install a 3 point Alarm.

My question is what is your recommendation:

1. Which brand? and which type?
2. cost?
3. Where to buy? (NSW- Syd)
4. where to install?

My question is what is your recommendation: answers in red

1. Which brand? and which type?
When I was researching an alarm for my car a lot of people (mainly installers) told me to steer clear of the cheap alarms on ebay and those made in China etc. The common word of advice was to buy an Australian alarm, that way there is plenty of support for it here and the build will be of decent quality. As for type, I'd recommend you get something that you can upgrade later without having to uninstall (eg, mongoose and cyclops offer base units which you can add-on to to upgrade). Start with the basic immobilizers and shock sensors and you can add all the fancy stuff later (i.e window lifters, proximity/microwave sensors etc etc).
2. cost?
I would spend between $600-800 (including install) personally. Remember that if somebody really wanted to steal your car, an alarm/immobilizer isn't going to stop them. Majority of the effort should be put into making your car unattractive to theives.
3. Where to buy? (NSW- Syd) Lifestyle (parramatta) or any car electronics store such as Jb Hi-fi, Strathfield. I'm sure there are some cheaper alternatives to these, just check out your local yellow pages or something.
4. where to install?
Some users on here recommend that you do it yourself. If you have the capabilities to do this then definitely do it. Otherwise, go to a self-employed auto-electrician. Stay away from the Strathfield and JB Hi-Fi crew as these guys don't rely on a good reputation for work. A self-employed auto-electrician will put the effort in to making sure you're 100% satisfied, as your word of mouth is potential business for him. Lastly, don't let anyone install it at your home. The less your installer knows about you, the better. Go to them, and never give out any info on where your car is kept and when.

Hope this has helped

its a bit hard to ask people to recommend what they're using on a public forum. that's like leaving whichever brand's sticker on your window. tells potential theives how to break in before they even see the car.

just make sure you have plenty of points of immobilisation in clever places (you can do more than 3!) and if you can go for black wiring... back up siren and hidden backup battery...

best of all, be wary of where you park your ride... if they want to bring tilt then there's nothing you can do i suppose
