Hi I am buying a 2005 euro luxury and have agreed with the seller for a price subject to mechanical inspection. However an independent (RACV) inspection revealed that front left tyre is damaged and needs to be replaced. The seller is suggesting that I can use the spare tyre (full sized) and use the damaged tyre as short term emergency spare. Assuming the spare is of the exact same brand and model of the other front tyres is it ok to do that? Thanks.

You should always use the same make, model and size of tyres in pairs e.g. matching front tyres, and matching rear tyres. However, I would be hesitant to use a pair tyres with significantly different wear levels. Firstly, tyres lose their grip as they wear, so the newer tyre will have more grip. Secondly, they will have slightly different diameters due to tread wear.

find the price of 2 new tyres, reduce agreed payment by this amount.
problem solved!

Thanks dtngo, I was only thinking they need to be the exact same make model and size but didn't think much about wear levels.
Power, I only asked him for the cost of one new tyre and he already said no, let alone two. We are supposed to finalise the deal (hand over cheques and keys and paperwork) tomorrow morning if he still won't budge and the spare is not compatible then I'll walk away.

Tony it was 2005 luxury, auto, 85000km, grey, asking price was $22.9k, final price was $22k.

Yeah in the end I did as seller suggested as the spare was the exact same one and it was a pretty good price (IMO) for the 2005 luxury auto with that mileage. Exchanged transfer form cheque and key and just went for a quick drive. Woohoo!

congrats on the purchase.. you'll definitely enjoy the new euro..

not sure why you needed to post this thread though.. it's all common sense.. $100-$200 for tyres when your spending 22k to buy a car should not be a deal breaker.

Doosra, I am sure I will.
My common sense tells me that if I am selling a car and one of tyres is unsafe it should be my responsibility to fix that before I sell it, unless it was noted upfront and taken into consideration in the price already. A couple of hundred dollars shouldn't be a deal breaker you are right but the onus should be on the seller to fix it, not the buyer. Anyway it's all moot point now as we have reached a compromise and the deal is done. Cheers.

Revivor, good for ya. Nice cars eh! :)

The tyre is fine to use if its identical to the spare (Same make, size and profile)

But like it has previously been stated, replace the tyre and lower the selling price.

Goodluck :)

Which year is the facelift model?

2006, but you could have bought it at the end of 2005. You can tell from the different front grill which has 3 horizontal chrome lines instead of the chrome diamond in the pic below.

Thanks for that. Is there any difference between the MY2006 and MY2007 models?

Cheers,
Kenn.
