Hi,

Does anyone know whats the best way to prep and spray wheel nuts? Im looking to spray some chrome nuts to matte black. How do i prep it so that the paint wont come off? And what materials would i need?

thanks heaps

I think someone has asked this before and the general consensus was probably better off to buy new ones since it's costly to colour them without making the paint chip quickly.

the ones i want does not come in black or i just cant find them at all. These are internal drive hex nuts with a uniquely shaped hex key.

Sand/Clean, then primer then paint with the colour you want, pretty sure there is a thread lying around with details of it.

I doint think just a primer and paint will work. Cuz if you decide to take your wheels off which you will need to do sometime.. the paint will chip and scratch instantly. You will need to get it really well powdercoated or even anodized and then baked for a long time to make the paint really hard.

i had a look in the DIY section where ppl paint their rims. So far ive gathered is to primer, let it dry, then apply the paint. Should this be enough? The outside of the lock nuts wont scratch cos ill be screwing it from the inside

it should work as long as you don't take the nuts off alot, i painted my ones with a spray can, no primer and they are holding up fine

best to use them engine enamel paints... they won't chip as easily as normal paints...

this is the only way to do it.

regardless how awesome you think your painting skills are, the paint comes off in the area that reqired some sort of key to remove due to impact and pressure.

oh and powerdercoating doesn't work either

Exactly what dsp has said.. painting with spray cans is cheap and nasty. Take your bolts off once or twice and the paint will be gone on the front face and will look shit and will be a waste of time

ill give it a try anyways since it was given to me for free. Im using internal drive lock nuts so the outside will be mint. I dont think it will scrape the paint on the inside as the key can go in in a certain way. Probably wont see the chipped paint as its on the inside. Worst case, ill use a brush and paint the inside

Good idea then! Best of luck
