Hey all,

Ive found a steering wheel that i would like to put on my 95 cord, however ive been told that i cant change the steering wheel over because i have the srs airbag safty feature on my car, apparently to change this is illegal, the cops are gonna bend me over soon enough i just dont particualry want to give them anymore to get me on.
does anyone know the answer to this

Is it legal? You need to ring VicRoads to find that out.

It is illegal, to even take off a steering wheel with airbag is!

illegal and stupid, and its not only the cops that will have a go while your holding your ankles

its not only the cops, like ECU-MAN said, but it will be your insurance company...if you have an accident, and they find out that you have changed the steering wheel that originally had the airbag, they will refuse to give you a payout or fix your car...

simple

illegal

and

stupid

the end :D

I think if you put in an aftermarket one with airbag,..it's fine...but they cost heaps..

illegal. but MAYBE an aftermarket that has airbag MAY be ok, but in this case a professional would be required to do it and it would need to be tested etc i should imagine.

easiest option. leave the stock one there, if u dont like the colour or something, just get it covered. simpler, cheaper, safer

definitely illegal, and its not safe to change airbag to non airbag steering wheel, better to leave the oem on

airbag is useful.....my friend saved his life from an airbag in a crash once

you could always get a ITR airbag wheel.

Sorry to hijack..

But what happens if you have an accident, airbag goes off and you replace it with just a normal steering wheel?

dunno i guess they just regas the airbag and pack it back into the new steering wheel, depends i guess on the damage done to the car and how stuffed everything is

IF you had an accident and the airbag deployed... 1. your car would be pretty stuffed anyway.. 2. You would appreciate what the airbag did for you so would want it installed again. 3. Your dead so no need to worry about that.

Airbags dont get deployed often.. if they do... replacing your steering wheel is the least of your worries.

Well this is in regards to a Skyline I bought from an auction and have fixed..

1. The damage wasn't that bad, front radiator support + radiator and a new bonnet + bumper bar. So it does not take much of a hit..

2. I have had quotes of thousands of dollars on replacing airbags and the hassles involved.

3. As in number 1, it does not require much of a hit for the airbag to release.

And I have seen many airbags deploy for the simplest of accidents, will let you know when I find out about laws in regards to airbags:wave:

if you car comes with a steering wheel with an airbag and u want to change it to a different one then the new one must have an airbag aswell. Momo have bought one out but apparently it costs something like $1000 for the steering wheel alone. then somone to fit it. if you have any doubts contact your local rta they have all the specs on what u can and cant do to your car.:honda:

my mates air bag came out when he hit a cat.. so it doesnt always take much for it to deploy..
and it only comes out on a front end collision. (for anyone who didnt know hehehe)
