My sister just bought one of them!
It's a great car,so boaty after driving mine...more a girls car :)
The Mazda is probably better drivability, brakes, resale value but the fd looks so sick if styled well.
I would go the Mazda if that was the choice personnally,I think it has more going for it,that is unless you can spend money on it to style it.Stock looks boring with potential :)

I'd definately go with the Mazda 3 if it's just an A to B for your mum, there's no point buying the FD for 'styling potential' if it's for your mum.

get a good mechanic and forget the dealer for service. warranty will still be covered. my brother has MK5 golf and as long as geniune parts are used, no worries.

You still have to service it more often though, don't you?

Like timing belts and brakes, don't they need to be replaced more often than in a Japanese?

Test driven 3 models of the Mazda 3, i.e. Neo, Maxx Sports & SP25, cant fault any of the models.

With regards to a Mazda 3 MAXX vs Civic VTi or VTi-L, there are a couple of factors you'd need to consider here:
1) Styling / Design

Interior: Both are one of the best in its price range/market. But if you move the next level up, i.e. Maxx Sports / SP25, I'd give it to them, coz of the features they include (be warned that too many buttons can cause discomfort :P ). Comfort wise, the Civic is marginally better, but you probably know that its made more for families coz they require better spacing.

Exterior: This is very subjective, I find the new Mazda3 very appealing, and would probably get one in the future. The Civic never appealed to me with the spaceship look, a little too long for my liking. The Mazda 3 hatch looks way better than the sedan. The rear of the Mazda 3 sedan looks a little out of proportion.

2) Handling

Civic: Its a Honda, what more can you say? Its definitely one of the better ones out there.

Mazda3: I'd give this to the Mazda 3. If you havent test driven them before, suggest that you do. When I did it on the SP25, I had the confidence to push it very very hard, and its perfectly balance, no understeer/oversteer imo.

3) Pricing & Accesories

Mazda 3 probably wins this judging by the RRP, bluetooth, built in GPS (for the Maxx Sports / SP25). But on road costs are probably going to be high, and they might not give you much discounts. I rang them up for a certain model, and there was a 2 month wait :( If you can get one in stock no waiting time :)

4) Power / Petrol Consumption

With the Mazda3, one thing that impresses me most is that it had a constant pulling power, throughout the band. So you wont be disappointed. Civic is a little weak compared to the car. However with more grunt comes more petrol consumption. Driving like a nana, you'd probably achieve around 8.2 lt/100km, normal driving (with lots of cruising) would give you 8.6-8.8. But once youe start enjoying a little too much, u'll be getting like 10 - 14 lt/100km :P Civic gives a more consistent rate, and I'd say go for the Civic if petrol prices is one of your main concern :)

Summary :
Better car, I'd say the Mazda 3, but for cost / resale value, go for the Civic. In last month's car sales summary, the Mazda 3 (with more than 3.6k sales) was above the Corolla, and just under the Holden Commodore. The Civic wasnt even in the Top 10, so that probably tells you a story?
