engine missing before vtec kicks in

hey guys iv got a integra xsi with the b16a engine, and im experienceing missing when the car is getting put under load or even just accelerating, but goes away when vtec kicks in. it occurs around 2-4 rpm. and its become so bad that the orange engine check light comes on. does anyone no what the problem could be.

yeh iv had the plugs and leads changed, still occuring.
took the car to the guys at honda and they wont plug it into the computer system to check what wrong because they dont want to risk it wrecking the computer because the car is imported. and there for "not compatible"

well iv only had the car about 2 months and seemed strong when i baught the car, and still does pull hard when the vtec kicks in. timing belt was replaced 16,000kms ago so that should be no problem. car has 220,000 that of a older ladie owner who knew bugger all about cars and i doubt she even got the car in vtec.
