hey guys,

Im removing the power steering rack in my crx, but can't get past the shift linkages. Only last week i've banged the bitch pin into the linkage connector but now i have to remove it.

Apart from drilling it out - is there any other way you guys can suggest to get it out unharmed?

Cheers
Mike

Great link  looks like a good way around it, pressing it out is definitely better than banging on it with a hammer + punch

yup - sounds like an 8mm punch and hammer should do the trick. See how we go - mine is pretty munted so hope its not a drill job.

think mines a drill job.. 30 minutes hammering snapped punch broken hammer.. moved about 3mm.. where to buy new bitch pin?

from Honda? shouldn't be more than 10 bucks i'd say?

otherwise try one of those weekend parts shops - 8mm should be good i think

spray some lube
and its more about how you hit it and where the punch impacts
once it starts moving its easy as to get out

but having the right size punch helps

What Lan said.

I've done it like that heaps of times and never fails! Even when I've had 4 inches of swinging room!

Just make sure you have the right sized punch and aim it straight onto the pin. You don't need a lot of swing room if you have a heavy mallet.

i think it was an aircon compresser 12mm long bolt with the pointed tip. Centers its self to the pin, has the right width, and enough room to hold the bolt while smacking it. Best of all its OEM Honda >.>

Only tried it with b16a b18c tho, others may be different.

Did mine with good sized punch and solid mallet/hammer. Didn't need that much swing room like "String" mentioned. Just a bit of elbow grease & persistence..... but Lube aint a bad idea.

Virgin bitch (pins) are always tight. The more times you punch it the looser/easier it gets.

hope u guys pulled the seal out of the box before you hit the pin cos most times it craps the seal in the box and your gonna need to replace it.
We hit mine also and the shift seal in the box started leaking. Ended up replacing it.

ALso only hit it with a punch and it was all fine

To add to this, dont use the normal hammers, use the ones with a heavier end... Puts more impact on the pin and less effort required

to reiterate -

it is a 8mm flat headed punch.

Take off rubber boot , take off C cover - get plenty of swing room and hit the punch with a decent heavy hammer or mallet.

yeh,i did a seal on my first go at the bitch too.

hasnt happened since with the new seal, maybe something more prone to happening to an old seal perhaps?

anyway, think im liking the g clamp method also.

i got the bitch pin out recently.. just scratched around for a bolt slightly smaller than the pin and hammered it.. took maybe 10 hits and it was out.

likewise - got it out using a 8mm pin punch... no drilling or cutting or grinding :)

so, everyone is saying an 8mm pin punch is the way to go???

if so, i'll get one from bunnings.

Yes ffs.
Get a FLAT HEADED 8mm punch. Use a medium or heavy hammer , a few whacks or heaps of light taps will see it shoot up and out.

FLAT HEADED

i cant stress that enough, the only reason i failed is because i was using a round headed one. come out very simply with like 4 hits with a 8mm punch jus make sure its flat headed

find a pin punch that will fit in the pin , and belt it on a angle,

If not use the pin punch, and punch the burrs in, so it isn't in the way

bennjamin

Some needle nose pliers may pinch the edges in too - try a two pinches at perpendicular angles

I used a powersteering pump bolt to get mine out very easy. Just line it inside and hammer away.
I suggest going in from the other side and hammering it out.

I use to lie on my back and hammer away as well, which works but can take a while with some stubborn pins. Plus you don't exactly have much room to swing a hammer when lying on your back, you risk damaging other parts and your arm gets really sore

This new method I've just concocted is basically a contraption involving a g-clamp, torx bit and a couple sockets. You can probably figure out where I'm going with this. Instead of hammering shit, you're simply pressing it out.

Much quicker, cleaner and safer in my experience.

FOOL PROOF WAY- tapperd 12mm bolt that bolts the A/C to the bracket if that bolt is too long and u can get swing on the hammer ull find another 12mm bolt that goes thru the bracket and tensions your pwr steering pump the tapper centers the punch and wont chamfer the sides making it harder to get out
