I was in the market for a new pod filter... After hearing good things about Autobarn "Drift" filters i went to go buy 1... funny thing is i got 1 and was gonna buy it until i noticed there was a defect on it... the metal ring around the top of the filter said Calibre instead of Drift...

After some research i found out that Autobarn "Drift" and Supercheap "Calibre" pod filters are both made by the same company Simota in Taiwan... Cheaper pod filters like SAAS, 3A Racing, SCA which have rubber inlet molds are also made by Simota but sell generally $10-$15 cheaper cos they dont have a polyurethane base... they all use the same synthetic cloth filter media but just with different colour dye. I also come across this pod filter shootout...

http://www.australianauto.com.au/HTML/Images/Air%20Filter%20Shoot%20Out.pdf

Now you can all guess which filter i bought...

Just fork out for a K&N filter. Tried, proven & reliable.

very interesting finally a decent review on air filters, i was told a few years ago that the 3A filters were better then the K&N flow wise and to be honest i was skeptical but hey for 30 odd bucks you cant really go wrong can you!

Wow go 3A... but i guess how do we know the accuracy of this test? Doesnt surprise me those rediculous HKS "Rock Catcher" overpriced shitty filters performed the worst.. But i guess its genius that a company can some something that is utter shit to someone and make them believe its complete gold and worth the money ahahah

^^^ i always thought that the HKS and Trust filters were there to stop rocks caz i seen a few cars in japan with the filters on with mesh but no foam in them, apparently the foam dose pretty much nothing so i see where they were coming from now :P :)

the airflow test isn't valid as the airflow characteristic they were pushing through isn't even similar to how a combustion chamber sucks air in through the intake.

That test would only really be valid on turbo cars.

airflow aside, air velocity is more important on NA hondas for power. this can only be achieved with velocity stack or cone types like the apexi

Yonas @ JDMYard (aka EG5) stocks 3A Racing filters, as well as Blox filters w/ Velocity Stack.

here's something for everyone to think about...

you can go out and buy a k & n filter for say $100-$120 or you could buy 3 or 4 of the 3A racing filters...

when your $30 3A racing filter gets really dirty... instead of cleaning it and oiling it and can just go spent another $30 for a new one...

their about the same quality and do the same job...

Either that or wash it. Easy either way

how bout this for everyone excited here with an NA...

go get the 3A filter... and get it dynoed... and compare it to your K&N on the same sheet... and post it back here.

It flows more, but you NA guys can't even utilise the flow.... If you want actual power returns on a filter get the Blox velocity stack filter as mentioned a few times.

It's just a filter whereas a blox isn't just a filter

that wasn't the point i was making... why spend money going backwards... like that fella who put a b16a head on his b18c2 block...

but oh well $30

DSP, explain more on your thinking. If 'max' flow is greater on one filter that the other then surely 'med' flows would be greater too? After all the the experiment is testing air resistance though the complete filter.

3A racing came first out of a shoot out that Autosalon Mag did a while ago.
It was in issue 51.

Long story short, here are their results:

AEM dry flow
flow: 9th
filtration: 3rd

A'PEXi Power Intake
flow: 7th
filtration: 6th

HKS Direct Drive
flow: 6th
filtration: 9th

K&N RR-3301
flow: 4th
filtration: 1st

Redline Airforce 1
flow: 2nd
filtration: 10th

Simota Power Stack WS002
flow: 3rd
filtration: 5th

Tenzo WS002-CH
flow: 8th
filtration: 4th

3A racing
flow: 1st
filtration: 2nd

Trust Airinx
flow: 5th
filtration: 7th

No Name (Trust imitation)
flow: 10
filtration: 8th

blox velocity stack is not there and tbh i dont belioeve in tests... its all what works on the street
Its one thing to work on a flow bench and filtration tester but its another to work reliably and efficiently on the street

DSP, explain more on your thinking. If 'max' flow is greater on one filter that the other then surely 'med' flows would be greater too? After all the the experiment is testing air resistance though the complete filter.

Because i've seen it first hand on a Dyno for B-series... we also did a series of testing with the JWT Pop Chargers for Nissans which is the same thing and results were the same but the test was against the metal mesh Blitz pods

Blox actually made power all-around where-as the 3A made power around 6500rpm.

Same reason people get Tapered throttlebodies for Honda's to increase air-flow velocity to actually 'ram' air in like force induction. or picking the correct Intake manifold size and plenum length for optimum airflow for NA or boosted setups.

i'm going to ASSUME the reason for the characteristic of the high flowing filter on an NA is because it flows too much causes turbulance and slow air etc...

What i'm getting at, at the end of the day is Spend $30 gain some somewhere lose elsewhere. Get the blox one and you have proven gains everywhere. Cmon we drive Honda's people spend money to get the extra poofteenth of power.. why not make it useful power?

Got my 3a racing filter off ebay almost 1.5 years ago...

this article posted is about 1.5 years old tooo

KN filter is good, but because it is an oiled filter.. it can be dangerous when reservicing the filter , like over oiling it..

dsp26

oiled filters are detrimental to cars that use a MAF/AFM because the actual sensor that protrudes in the intake path gets covered in oil and can be damaged easily if not cleaned with the utmost delicacy (contact cleaner on cotton buds)
