Hi all, decided this is the next mod to the car and am just starting researching now.
i see there has been a thread on s2ki on it where kia gears were used, i just wanted some more recent updates etc.
I believe i source the pionion and wheel from kia, for a sportage front diff?
what are the other parts that i require, or is there a diy/link someone can direct me to where i can learn more about what is required to do this? i knwo about hte yellow box from modifry, most likely will be getting hanny's to do the swap (or is it better to take it to a diff/tranny specialist?)
also cryotreating in sydney, anywhere know where i can get this done and costs/what is required.
thanks
John

Theres actually a shit load of threads on s2ki.com that cover everything.
Regarding recent updates.... there are none. You can go to KIA, or you can order from J's racing for double the price for the same product. I guess the only recent thing (and its not that recent anymore) is that j's racing offer a 5.1. Probably a bit too much for a street car IMO
Xviper did a DIY on s2ki, im pretty sure its a sticky. Considering the special tools needed all he covers is what parts are required (as i do in my thread) and how to remove and reinstall the diff. The swapping of he crown and pinion was done by a pro. You'll find that not any mechanic or tunning shop can do a job like this.
Regarding cryo treating open up your yellow pages and start making some calls.
S2ki.com has everything you need to know.

ah i actually read your diy, but im not the most mechanically minded so wanted to find a more basic diy/discussion on it. i know the basics behind teh end result but i guess i wanted to bring my technical knowledge up to date on whats involved in the swap.
how are you finding the 4.77's now? whats fuel economy like around town? what gear do you reach 100km/hr and at what rpm?
also 110km/hr on the freeway in 6th what rpms?
cheers
john
i get around 400kms on a tank with the gears :) driving in peak hour traffic etc
besdies the parts u mention .. u might wanna also purchase new seals as well from honda
it will set u back about the 1k mark for parts and install

I think 100 km/h will set up back around 3800-4000 rpm

Your not gonna find a basic DIY cause its not a basic job. If you want to understand how it works, whats required and what sort of end result to expect have a search through S2ki.com. I probably spent at least two months reading before i went through with it, but i guess thats partly due to the fact no one on the AU forums had done this before.
Like I said there is heaps on info on final drive swaps..
If you want to know more about RPM's and gear speeds play around with this calulator.

Hope it helps

i just took it to a workshop down the street where i live and yea they removed my diff and sent it off to some diff specialist with all my goodies :)
could of got it done at IS motor racing for about the same amount for labour
which was around 300-400ish?
the rest was for parts

Dunno you'll have to call, but seeing as though they are two totally different companies and your asking about two totally different products, im thinking no. Also your gonna have to find out what year mx-5 the compatible 4.44 is from, I cant remember off the top of my head.
Shouldn't be hard its been covered about a million times.
IMO I wouldnt bother with the 4.44 unless you want specific ratios for a particular track.

hmm, i plan on upgrading to a lightened flywheel later on as well. im thinking 4.77 might be a bit too aggressive for my liking given that the f20c's torque curve is actually quite flat. and in the event that i go with f/i as well i believe the 4.77 will be way to short for my liking

Well i've got a 3.8 kg flywheel, 4.77 fd and 152.1 rwkw. The cars a daily driver and I think the setup works pretty damn well.
In regards to FI most ppl in the states with supercharger kits love the 4.77 due to the chargers mostly kicking in at 6K rpm.
If your gonna go turbo, dont waste your money on changing your final drive, there are better places to spend it.

I sold my 4.56's before i installed them because when you're running over 330rwhp, its a lost cause amongst the FI guys.
