Well i went driving to Canberra today and done some tourist action and while i was driving through the streets of Canberra, i heard a cracking sound. I was wondering where it came from and i noticed that a 15cm crack had formed at the bottom of the windscreen. I went out to inspect it and no damage was occurred to it from the outside, so when i glide my finger across it from the outside or even the inside, i can't feel any abrasions but i see it.

I rang up AAMI, hoping under my comprehensive insurance they would repair it but they said i didn't take out the 45 dollar protection which would have gave me a new windscreen and so on. She goes that i can pay the excess of $500 and they will repair it. I told her the whole windscreen would cost much less than that amount and hanged up.

Anyways, i'll take a picture tomorrow but are these forms of cracks repairable? What's the cheapest company that will do this service?

15cm crack is too big to repair

pretty sure if cracks are formed from side of windscreen it's unrepairable.... roughly around the size of 1dollar coin is repariable

A company called Ultra Bond Windscreen Repairs say that they can do:

"Long Crack Repairs
Cracks to 18 inches from the edge, or in the middle of the screen "

http://www.ultrabond.com.au/articles/article3.html

It's in the middle of screen but starts from the bottom, so i'm hoping it's possible. ****ing AAMI, i don't feel like buying a new windscreen :(

yea if it's in the middle you do have more chances of saving it. but in regards to repairing cracks to 18inch is questionable

How much does it normally cost for a windscreen replacement? O'Brien doesn't even give figures. I know O'Brien is a rip off, so who is best and cheaper?

why dont u ring up the insurance company tell them to put it on your policy than ring than back week later and say ur windscreen cracked. thats if you can add it into the policy

I thought of that a second after ringing them but then thought "****"! Wouldn't they have made a note?

Damn O'Brien quoted me $755 for it because i had the rain sensor and all that bullshit.

Better to pay the excess and do it through insurance. Have to ring around some more.

The crack is def too big to repair. Too risky.

A friend of mine had a crack in their ED Civic hatch repaired recently, it just ended up splitting again. Lucky they complained enough and got the company to put some funds towards a new windshield.

So if you go through insurance, ensure that they replace the glass

ring around....don't go to the big name companies.
i had a windscreen replaced for around 250-300 a couple years ago...i remember obrien quoted 500+

the difference is they use generic brand instead of the ones from manufacturers...he even replaced all the seals for me....which obriens said would be extra if THEY ripped it.

This place was out around smithfiled area...can't remember.

obrien quoted 550 for is200 front windscreen. new seals and labour + windscreen. it looked exactly like the oem one with all the black specs around it. as for the other companies, i dont know about their workmanship, but obrien aint too bad

as for calling up to put the windscreen option onto the car, and then claiming it a week later.. you'd get done for fraud, and no other insurance company will ever insure you again

why you skimp on the windscreen protection on you insurance??

can the insurance with ammi and buy another insurance somewhere... then put a claim a couple weeks later

I had a big crack on my windscreen some time last year. O'brien's quoted me just under $500. OEM seals and glass was the reason they gave me for the price being so high. I ended up paying $175 from a business I found on google. A week later I got a stone chip, that cost me $40 to repair, and the week after that another $40 for another stone chip.

Can't you just buy a 2nd hand windscreen from the wrecker and get that fitted?

I was never even told about it, when i signed the comprehensive insurance, there was two boxes and i think they were protection against theft and fire only.

zco, i wasn't going to do it, just wishful thinking.

I'll try the wreckers... but shame it has to be a rain sensing version which is going to be a bitch to find. O'Brien was pushy in trying to convince me that their glass was the best, so before considering the competition, just be sure they offer life time guarantee and all that crap.

I have also noticed the crack increased in length by amount 3cm just sitting in the garage, i think the windscreen wiper accidently turned on when i was washing the bugs off and thus putting pressure on it, it's not going to explode in my face is it?

it will crack but no explode

With temperature/pressure changes and flexing of the chasis, the crack will continue to spread.

there are 2 types of windscreen, tempered glass and lami glass, with lami being more expensive and used as standard on new cars. temper ones are normaly used for the side windows or rear windscreen. Some people who replace cheaper front also opt to use temper.

Lami as the name said, is laminated type so it will not break in to small pieces but stay as 1 big cracked glass, kinda like a tinted glass. tempered ones are tougher then normal glass, kinda like lami ones, wouldnt explode but after a while it will rain all over you... go google more about it, lazy to explain plus, failed english...

just don't worry about it... and call insurance up and insure for windscreen .. then claim somewhere down the track.
