Its is exactly that. If hooked up correctly, it catches oil vapours that otherwise would be sucked up by your engine through the PCV system. Its better to be caught by the catch can then to be injested by your engine. Have a search, theres pleanty of info on the forums. Google PCV system as well, so you understand how and why that works too.

Catches the oil sludge build up in your intake
EDIT: Read my sig ! LOL

i'm just wondering how the oil actaully flows into the intake manifold.
just say you have been doing some high rpm driving and oil is slung up near the pcv valve...when exactly would that oil get sucked up? is it during high vacumm such as engine braking?
if so how far would the oil actaully go through the pcv pipe? would it leak slowly through the pipe between the pcv valve and the intake? or would oil go from the pcv valve into the engine within a few seconds?
i have to top up roughly 300ml every 1000km which is fine.
what i notice is after some hard driving my car might burn some oil randomly at the next few traffic lights which stinks...it can be visible at night as a few puffs of white/blue smoke in the side mirror.
oil catch can is one thing. aimed to connect inline to the PCV and/or crankcase vent.
oil breather tank can can incorporate the same as the above but more additional crankcase pressure eleviation such as in a boosted cars. multiple venting into a baffled breather tank with a large inlet filter

on that note,
when you do high rpm driving, and that burning smell happens after, what is going on exaactally? (mechanically)
how good/bad is it?
ive recently converted my auto to a manual, and decided to try it out, and high rpm driving is fun,
especially when you've got a hole in your centre console left over from the conversion (auto chassis has 2 holes as opposed to one for the shifter and stuff) so the noise is super loud lol,

hope u dont get an exaust leak then:eek:

its the oil vapours that pass the pcv and go back into the intake.
sometimes the oil doesnt get trapped and therefore the TB and IM get dirty.
an oil catch can eliminates that by having the vapours go into the can instead of the pcv.
on that note, if you want to pass rego you need to get a can that doesnt have a breather.

exhaust/engine just getting hot?
also if you are idling and the radiator fans start, the smell does blow up to your windows and it smells heaps :P
so anyone have any idea about oil in the pcv valve?
is there enough pressure in the IM to force oil immediately from the pcv into the engine or does the oil slowly leak down?

how ' bad' is this for the car itself?
would it be considered reasonably normal? and what are the long term effects of this if done constantly/?

bad?
as long as you maintain the car everything will be fine.

back to original topic: is it really neccesary to have a catch can set up?

apparently the oil baffle in the rocker cover in bb6 preludes don't work that good...
i tried to order a catch can a month ago to see if i catch oil through the pcv valve but stock is taking a while to arrive.
it depends on the car i guess.
my friend's EK Civic GLi doesn't burn any Honda FEO oil...

i guess you would need one if the pcv isnt working enough and you still get oil stains in the IM/TB
