View Full Version : DC2R front caliper differences...

This might be a well known fact by the greater honda community and I'm just a dumbarse who has just stumbled apon it now....
I've got a feeling there was a difference in DC2R front calipers between pre and post 98 (4 lub 5 lug setups). EDIT: OK there is a difference in the caliper - 96 ITR = 262 brake setup in 4x114.... DUH! (slaps self)
Measured a set of recently purchased DC2R calipers last night and the piston size was 54mm.
Referencing from the interweb, people are saying they measure theirs at 57mm.
These calipers I measured take the ITR sized pad without a doubt, which is were I was left scratching my head when I went into the garage late last night after bottling home brew. (No I did not drink anything last night and all measurements were triple taken with the old trusty veniers ;) )
For further reference....
From memory non ITR tegs actually run a 54mm piston I believe.
Pulled out my EK4 calipers and measured a piston size of 50mm.
I've got this feeling that while 262mm brakes are apparently all the same from pad application, the actual piston size is determined from model of car ie. civic or non R teg.
Thoughts?

Yeah i'm pretty confused too bro. But like I said, I'm 99% sure it can't be 96 spec cause 96 spec ITR has uses a 262mm rotor like the EK4, unlike 98+ which is 282mm rotor which requires the larger caliper.

HAHA its bizzare ay.... there is no doubt that they are holding 98 sized pads.
I'll try to take pics tonight and post.
Basically wanting this to be a thread with accurate measurements for furture reference for others, so if anyone out there has a set laying around... feel free to measure the piston diameter and post up.
EDIT: EDITED FIRST POST.
Question now is... What really is the piston diameter on the DC2R 98 caliper?

I reckon the interweb is probably telling you fibs.

I'm starting to think so too dude... don't think this thread was started because of being sus on the calipers bro, I'm convinced they are ITR, based on the pad size in them. This is just to satisfy my curiosity and get info correct on the piston sizing.
Interestingly, even one of our own guys also mentioned them being 57mm a while back...

Given the info nd55 gave, I assumed he had measured them...
I guess assumptions really are potentially the mother of all f'ups.
I'll try to get some pics reguardless.

His post was nice enough to list the part number 17CL15VN. Check the numbers yo, should have a R or L for left and right appended.

Ok checked caliper numbers 17CL15VN (Nissin) Code matches internet references for 98 DC2R front Caliper..... I got 54mm as per pics below.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v698/SPEEDCORE/IMG_2031.jpg Take my word for it... was 54mm ;)
Measured OD of imprint on back of pad...

Checked my EK4 calipers, number 16VL14VN (Nissin) .... piston size 50mm as per pics below.

And again imprint on back of EK4 pad....

So god knows where the 57mm is comming from for 98 ITR piston size.
Oh well if anything at least there are some reference pics and measurements for the future.
Took some extra ones for the hell of it...
Bendix printout for DB1206 (98 ITR pad) *pad in pic had DB1206 on it also but faded* pefectly lined up.

ITR caliper VS EK4 caliper

EK4 pad (with friction material lined up to very left of DB1206 template) was a good 20% more surface area at least.

u do know some earlier ek4s had smaller calipers? It uses the smaller pads that the earlier 96 civics use. I know in the 2000+ or so all the civics moved to the larger calipers & rotors.
I've seen this on one ek4 before, maybe that's y?
