Went to see a dc2r that had nice mods to it.

This is the car here -> http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=6778795&keywords=type%20r&tsrc=allcarhome&__Ntk=CarAll&__Nne=15&__Dx=mode%20matchany&PriceTo=413&__No=0&PriceFrom=393&__D=type%20r&seot=0&silo=1011&__Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial&__sid=1213FFF6BF50&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282%204294965322% 204294965105%20393%20413%20903&__Ns=pCar_RankSort_Int32|1||pCar_Price_Decimal|1|| pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&Cr=8&__Ntt=type%20r&trecs=16&__Qpb=true

car seems very nice. although when i spotted black recaros i asked what happened to the stock red ones. The owner told me the car had been stolen in 2002 and they had removed the red recaros. Upon further investigation of the car i spotted a very unusual gap near the door and compared it to the other side. The other side didnt have that gap so i asked if the car has been in any accidents. The owner said no. I had this weird vibe from the owner so i went home and did a revs check. found out the car is a statutory write off.

Vehicle Registration: RKT934
Registration Status: CURRENT UNTIL 12/02/2010
VIN/Chassis Number: JHMDC23101S200135

Stolen Status: NOT-STOLEN
Encumbrance Status: NO-ENCUMBRANCE
Vehicle Make: HONDA

you cannot reregister a statutory write off. so if anyone in the melbourne area is looking for a dc2r.. stay away from this one.

this is why you need to do a revs check for whatever car you buy... $30-$50 just gives you piece of mind and basic history of the car...

im guessing the recaros were damaged when the car was written off.. so they replaced them with black ones. haha dc2itr, the car gets to me in a few days cant wait.

im also guessing he renewed the rego before the accident?

altho the rego should of been voided already :S vicroads lol

I did some research and according to VicRoads (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Registration/HowToRegisterOrTransfer/RegistrationRequirements/WrittenOffVehicleRegistration.htm), you cannot re-register the vehicle if it was a statutory write-off after 1 May 2002, so this could possibly mean that you can re-register statutory write-offs which occurred prior to 1 May 2002.

Quoted from Vic Roads link;

Statutory write-off
A vehicle that is recorded as a statutory write-off after 1 May 2002, cannot be re-registered and the vehicle identification number (VIN) cannot be reused.

A vehicle will be recorded as a statutory write-off if it is a total loss and so severely damaged that it should not be repaired. Only certain parts from statutory write-offs may be used to repair other vehicles. The following document provides a guide for the use of parts from water and fire damaged vehicles.

So judging by that I am assuming it depends on when (date/year) the statutory write-off occured.

Although I'm not 100% sure.

Better not to jump to conclusions, if the car is registered and has rego till 2010 then it may be legitimate.

May not be the best car to buy, but might not be impossible to own.

Not sure about the owner's claim in the add 'latest type R' LOL

Haha I saw that as well, but I think he means the latest (or last) DC2 Type R, seeing it's a 2001.

potential buyer should probably enquire through vicroads etc prior to any commitment. the car was registered somehow afterall...

If any car, let alone a sports car is damaged so badly as to be deemed a write off, it should be just that....a write off. Too be used for parts at best.

A number of years ago a friend of mine owned a nicely modified DC2R and it had been rear-ended, by the looks of it not to badly. Anyway, after a year or so ownership, some hard driving and track day or two(that said, the car was religiously maintained), the rear of the car started to just rip apart.
The car was sold, the new owner knew about the damage and paid accordingly....and I think my friend was lucky.

It's free to find the information the OP did. Paying for a certificate simply guarantees the information you received and protects you from finance worries.

you guys do realise that Stolen Recaros and a little damage to the interior would be enough for a Type R to be given a stat write off title.

Stat write off i believe is when cost of repairs make the car not worth repairing. Recaro's from Honda are close to 10K

i think it would be enough to be a repairable writeoff..

oh crap, i should do a check on mine. my passenger side door and fender are a different shade of red to the rest of the car so im assuming its been hit, hopefully it wasn't a write off. thanks OP for bringing that up
