Hello all,

Just a question about electronic gauges and installation. I was wondering if electronic gauges come with their sensors and have to placed in a certain position to be able to receive a reading, or are they to be connected up to the cars sensors and read from there? I know mechanical gauges come with sensors that need to be placed in particular positions to be able to recieve accurate readings, but was unsure as to how electronic gauges are installed and the way in which they function. I'm not too sure how they work and would like a bit more information before investing in some. Any information would be appreciated.

Cheers.

To my knowledge, the electronic gauges have their own sender unit which sits in your engine bay and transmits the data to the gauges in your car via wires.

Some electronic gauges also give you the ability to record, store peak values and have warnings (lights and/or beeps).

These gauges (electronic) are the ones you can pretty much mount anywhere.

Regarding mechanical gauges, the way they read the data is via tubes/lines which are actually connected to the source of what is being measured, i.e. oil. However the negative side of this is apparently it can cause leaks of fluid into the cabin (or where the gauge is mounted), and I've read cases of the lines used for the mechanical gauges bursting/causing engine fires when not installed properly.

Electronic gauges have their own sensors that match them. You can't even use sensors from other brands of gauges.

You need to attach the oil temperature sensor onto a sandwich plate which goes between the engine and the oil filter. The oil pressure sensor can go on where the oil pressure switch is using a T-joint. Or you can put it on the sandwich plate as well but it won't show the true engine oil pressure. The coolant temperature sensor goes on an attachment that you put on your radiator hose.
