View Full Version : central locking question
ive got a 92 EG5 VTi. the central locking in the car is busted. to be specific the driver side door is using an aftermarket actuator wired to an alarm which is working. the passenger side door is not using anything so it doesnt open when i press the remote. can i just buy another after market actuator for the passenger door and wire it to the current alarm, is it just plug and play? or is there more to it? thanks

how do you know if its busted,? have you checked the aftermarket actuator? test for power? and earth? and most of the times its not plug and play you usually need a drill handy
the aftermarket actuator on my driver side door is working. theres no aftermarket actuator on the passenger door. ive replaced the OEM lock mechanism on the passenger door and it still didnt work. then i ripped off the driver side door to get an insight to what goes on when i press the remote and found the aftermarket actuator there
i meant the stock door mechanism is busted i think because the previous owner put in the after market actuator but only for the driver side. i got the car as is
i know u need a drill to put the actuator in place, but in regards to wiring, can i just plug it into the same alarm that the drivers side actuator is using?
my friend had a similar problem with his 92 GL... his came with busted central locking and a aftermarket actuator in the driver door, but the passenger never worked
basically he checked out the central lock harness in the driver door (OEM one theres a plug for it- its 3 wires) and he found out that the switch in the driver side latch was worn out. he couldnt find a replacement so he just soldered some more metal to the contact switch and it worked. you can test if you driver contact switch is dead by shorting out 2 of the 3 wires from the driver side door (middle contact with either outside contacts)
ill see if i can find the diagnosis page in the service manual
gl on fixing it
edit i think this might help... if you can read it

thanks for the info
mines got an aftermarket actuator only on one side. just wondering if i cant buy another aftermarket actuator and wire it up to the same system. is it possible?
no need aftermarket actuator on passenger side if your car came with factory central door locking.
ie even w/out the aftermarket actuator in the driver's door, when you lock/unlock driver's door with key or internally; the passenger driver is meant to door and unlock as well. The micorswitch inside driver switch tells the passenger factory lock acutator to lock/unlock.
what that aftermarket driver's door actuator does is to mimic a person's lock/unlock action so when wired to an alarm/remote control you can do this away from car.
oh i should mention that when i use the key to unlock the driver side door, the passenger side doesnt unlock. if that helps

in that case the fault could be:
mircoswitch in driver's door
wiring, power feed/earth to factory central lock system
passenger door factory actuator
best bet to fix it, is to get a copy of the service manual and read through the power/central lock section. but as eg30 said driver door contact switch, earth/power, or the latch actuator
