as castrol says: oils aint oils

i was reading a independant document a few weeks back comparing the top of the line 15w-50 penzoil synthetic against the fusch's and the pennzoil had a 10hp (approx) gain =]

i shall go and look for my automotive mechanics text book and see if it has a detailed explination of how it makes a difference.

what does this prove?

+1, how bout engine wear etc does it being proven here?

it proves that by just changing oil u can get close to 10kw atw gain.

good watch,
but does different oils work on different cars?
I was tthinkin of doing all honda oils for minor service, but now since watching this video i want to go use Nolun :D

good test BUT,,I wonder if the oils were at correct operating temps,,,,, they were all 30 weight that is thin for High HP ,,,
I use 50 or 60 weight for track work oil temps around 70c
I use 300v the thing i like is the 0 sheer which means metal cannot touch metal under high forces,,saves the engine

did you noobs bother to watch the video?

if you couldnt tell that it was a comparison of power outputs, as affected by choice of engine oil then you are fairly stupid.

Its just a power run test. Whop de do. :p

Interesting none the less.

i rather sacrifise some power for more protection on my engine...

dont forget all synthetic oils....... so all offer good protection. :)

so the nulon supposedly improved performance by 7kw or so??

<_<

I was gonna try royal purple next in my car

It proves that a particular EVO 4WD turbo car, can gain up to 10kw by just the choice of oil, what does this prove for a normal car or a N/A? What happens if it just so happened that, that particular batch of oil was different to a batch of oil made elsewhere...
The video is concluding that, a nulon is the better oil in a turbo charged evo engine, would do the results still apply for the monaro N/A v8?? Or if it were a v4 or v6 N/A . Thats for 2 car manufacturers. Holden and Mitsubishi, what about all those other 100 car manufacturers.

soo realistically what does it prove for us as consumers?

Must give rep to the guy who put the effort into to do it though, but these results really only apply to his car.

overall tho it does show that you have a hp gain. you cant say that just because it is a evo motor that you wont see hp gains on a n/a car. at the end of the day a turbo is just a air pump on steroids.

i'd be guessing the rigoli would of done the test with the car running at operating temp otherwise he will be doing more harm then good to the motor by putting it on the dyno cold.

best oil for hondas? hondas/motul?

that doesn't prove anything.

3 things that are important in oil that i would look at are;
1) Protection against wear most important
2) rate of oil breakdown
3) performance

In that order, cos the most oil is gonna change your power is 1-2kw at most.
I would sacrifice 1-2kw if my engine lasted longer

I have an older oil bible, which shows the wear rate of oils on metal ballbearings as a comparison which is quite handy, & then does an oil analysis on oils in a car for a set period. Its old but if anyone is interested i'll email it to you.

dont forget all synthetic oils....... so all offer good protection. :)

Also synthetics do not protect better, they are less prone to breakdown so last longer

That's not how the oil rating works. 0 doesn't mean 0 sheer.

I'm not refuring to the weight of the oil as in 0w 40 etc...you have to read the spec s on the 300v oil and it mention its sheer capabilities

there is a test you can get done on your oil. They test for metal particals in your oil which let you know how your engine is wearing using that oil. Can't remember the company name. but could be useful. There are tests I ve seen where they test what temps the oil breaks down all would be good tests if then added to a HP test maybe...

lol good point , i've seen dyno figures change from the same car, just cos they changed some settings in the dyno software.

lol just replied to this same thread in a different forum yeah it tells you nulon makes power...... good for you honda boys you need as much as you can get :P but it doesn't tell you wear/ break down protection the fundamentals of what a oil is designed for.

Did you not see the dyno results on-screen? It's pretty simple what the test shows. I'm sure guys like you go into his shop and ask "if i use this oil, will my engine go better?". He's probably tired of all the same sh*t, so he documents this comparison so that people can make up their own mind.

Yeh it was a significant difference in power. So what? He aint tellin you to go buy that oil. That's the results. Pretty simple.

Whether or not it protects the motor, who knows. Why don't you go do your own tests and post up the results.

On another note, its f*ckn Vince Rigoli. I'm sure the guy knows how to run a comparison. He builds some of the fastest drag >insert any car< in Aus. but is more renown for building the fastest WRX in the world.

Jesus! I can't believe how a simple staight forward video can be ridiculed so much :thumbdwn:
