The engine responds quite well to a turbo. But IMO if you dont want to go that pathway, what about some nice suspension/wheels?

besides the usual I/H/E do the suspension
get some decent shocks (adjustable) harden up the rears for straight line action.
but do the rest of the handling stuff (Sway bars etc) make sure you research the handling department though. that way, even if you cant beat a turbo beast/V8 dinosaur in a straight line you should be a ble to lose them on the bends

or u can drop in a new engine.
really depends on ya budget...
if u wanna burn ppl...slap on a turbo, change ya cams, camgears, pistons, rods, and other lil stuff to make the block bullet proof....and turn up the boost...
