Gday guys
im thinking about doing an engine swap into my 86 crx and i had a couple of ideas and a couple of engine combinations but i have a few questions.

possibility number 1
B16B with a B16a cable tranny to make the swap easier.
the B16b is about 185hp if i remember right
and would probably be a bit lighter and easier. it would also look slightly neater in there i think.

possibility number 2
a B20 block and either a B18c or a B16a head.

my question is, i've done some research on this site but cant seem to find specs of a STOCK B20VTEC?

i cant decide because the car will be doubled as a track car so i would need to keep balance relatively nice. would the B16B's slightly lighter weight be better (keeping the 1.6)? i have a D16a3 in there right now.

would the B20 be worth it?

thanks guys
any input would be awesome :)

Technically there's no such thing as a stock B20 Vtec.
It depends on how good you make it when the conversion is done...
All that aside,
Value for money, the B20 is the way to go...
Money spent, the B20 is faster
The only advantage for the B16B is the capacity, or perceived capacity when modifed so you avoid rego & insurance hastles etc...

If it was my car, I'd be looking as a mildly built B20 with B16 head...

B20VTEC ftw lol. But why are you looking into a B16B/? why not B18C7 ? 1.8>1.6

B16B cause of light weight and the size. an 86 crx engine bay is very very very very small :( but mostly for the weight. the car is light weight and i'd like to keep it that way :) but yea still thinking......keep the input coming

The weight of a B16B & a B20 Vtec are pretty much the same...
The size is exactly the same....
The bigger motor will deliver more grunt for money sent.
If you're not limited in capacity by some class regulation you race in,
Then use the largest engine you can as bigger engines make more power more easily.

yea, is the B20 block roughly the same size as the B16?
i heard that somewhere when the CRV came out.......

a b16b motor is the same size as a b18c type r motor. a b16b has a diff crank/rods/pistons to a b18cr. buy the b16b chuck the crank/rods and fit a b18c crank/rods and u have yourself a 1.8 with 12+ compression and to look at from the outside will still say 1.6

I wouldn't waste my time with a B16 if your chasing N/A when comparing it to a B20vtec build.

They are physically the same size and the B20 is cheaper (in the long run) for power.

yea its sounding like the B20Vtec.
so if i built a B20 maybe........ mild cam, little bit of head work, headers.

how much power roughly would i be making?
and that B16B with B18CR crank and rods, has anyone done that? what kind of number does that make?

It all depends on budget!

I wouldn't stroke a B16B. If you want to throw in a B18CR crank and rods then your better off buying a B18CR motor.

1.6L :thumbdwn: 2.0L

prob cheaper to do a b20, bang for buck the b20 better value

the initial cost? of both?
i meant the B16B is an expensive engine of course but i would have to probably have to buy 2 engines for the B20. hmmmmm i could maybe get my hands on a B18A
