View Full Version : Car stuck/jammed in 1st gear after service :(

Hey guys.

Beeza and i just finished servicing my car.

We changed the trans fluid and everything else. Car was fine, i put from 1st to reverse, revered out and then put it in 1st and now its jammed.

We used oem honda manual trans fluid (my car is a d16y4 manual).

Also when we where changing the trans fluid we put a magnet rod in there to check for any shit and there was a ball-bearing in there :S

Is that meant to be in there? Because it was and it was working fine and now its jammed in 1st gear :(

Any help will be appreciated guys.

Thanks

If it is an automatic trans, yes, the ball bearing is suppose to be in there, but if it was just floating around, you're going to pull the trans plate off and find out where that little sucker is missing from, cause they are actually supposed to go into channels within the box.

Take it back to the mech.....

Aw fuuuuuu.

So its obviosly not meant to be floating around in there? So i pull the trans plate off and put the ball bearing back?

How would have it come out?

EDIT: lol mars.

Me and beeza done it :S lol

No I'm pretty sure if you just pull off the plate all the bearings will fall out, I can't be doubly sure, but generally the trans is pulled off, turned so the plate is uppermost, and then the plate is removed, you will then be able to see which channel is missing the ball bearing.

I just hope its not the bearing that is stuck between the gears because it will be a pain in the arse to get out.

It's a d16y4 manual.

We poured the transmission fluid down the dipstick hole.

Just behind the dipstick, there is a bolt on top there. That's the one that had a ballbearing in it when we took it off.I poured a little bit of fluid in there thinking it may where you put the fliud in...

Could that be the cause of the problem?

Its a manual but has a dip stick hole on it??

Sounds weird to me.

Hope you get it sorted before the cruise!!!!!!!

It has what we call a *dipstick hole* but it had no effing dipstickick in it.

Yeah,my mechanic told me you pour the fluid in on the side, not down that dipstick looking hole.

We will check it out tomorrow.Hopefully the fluid went into the transmission...

I can't check it until lunch tomorrow.Frustrating.

Where else could have it gone?

And what hole did we pour it in :zip:

Imo its a lot easier to use the speed sensor as per ben's guide in the DIY sub forum.

30-06-2009, 04:58 PM
You mean you poured it down the Vehicle Speed Sensor hole?
If so then it should be ok. lol

You can pour it through the filler hole which is on the side of the gbox housing but it gets messy when it overfills.

Thenit's gotta be where I put a bit of fluid down that other hole, that had the ball bearing in it.It has to be.Hopefully it will settle overnight and be ok tomorrow. But either way we will work it out.

That's such a relief.

Okay so we filled the wrong hole...i have heard that before :P

I guess that \s why the geaRs wouldnt move. Thanks for the help so far guys. What is meant to go down the sped sensor hole, anything?

the gearbox fluid lol

once drained.. tighten back up the bottom plug (should be a internal square pattern bolt)

open up the filler hole (the one above the bottom plug) and the speed sensor hole and fill the fluid until the fluid is slowly leaking outside the filler hole

once its stopped.. then you know you're at perfect level (flat surface and the car should not be on jacks now)

thats how i did mine on my gearbox.. its a b series gearbox so it should be very similar?

beeza
30-06-2009, 05:24 PM
It's that or the other ball bearing thing. It may have moved.

If it's the fluid in the ball bearing hole, then hopefully it will settle overnight.

If we get stuck,we can drive/coast upto my mechanics at mermaid bch.

that ball bearing you found is from one of the selector detents.

sorry to say, but for as proper fix, the box has to come out and pulled apart to put it back and find out why it came out in the 1st place.

beeza

Fark.

I stuck a magnetic stick in there and it grabbed it.I put it back, but it must not have gone back in properly.

Thanks John.Cheers mate.

Must have been pretty loose for a magnet to pull it out. Or some other things are a miss.

Get it checked out by a mech. At least take the box of yourself though and take the box to a mech. They'll charge you too much for removal and reinstall otherwise.

wheres the spring that was holding in the ball bearing beez, ive seen no mention of that?

should be a spring between the end of the bolt & the ball bearing to push the ball bearing into the detents on the shift fork.
find it,put it & ball bearing back in & have a good search around with the gearstick to see if u can find the selection.
im def no expert on g/boxs but the only thing i can picture is the selector has overrun the 1st/2nd gate.
maybe u can find it again with the gearstick if the detent bearing is back in place.....

Thank mate,I see.I will do!

Because the car was started, put into reverse then 1st could the ball bearing and the spring be loose in the gearbox somewhere? That's what it's looking like?

CRXer

thought u said the ball bearing was not put back in the box?

ball bearing & spring cant get past the shift fork shaft to fall into the box.

i cant see how the shift fork would dislodge from the synchro hub,so all i can see is the selector has come out of the gate, when u went to pull it outta first & first is still hooked up.If u put the spring & ball back in it might help u find the gate if u hunt around with the gearstick where 1st usually is. Dont know ,i could be way off the mark.

when u pulled the bolt out,the spring might got stuck to it & it dropped off without u noticing, kinda like the little drive link in the VSS does to some people.
have a look around in the motor under where u pulled the bolt out & maybe on the ground where u were working.

beeza

Thank U!!

I did put the ball bearing back in.I will have a good hunt around for the spring and a fiddle, see what we can do.

Hopefully find the bits and put em back in!

Words stolen out of my mouth. Exactly what ecu-man said, I dont know why you were trying to fill it through 'a dip stick hole looking hole' but if you smart enough you can buy those tiny hand pumps from autobarn for $20 and filled the box properly - through the filler hole.

Bad luck on the back yard mechanics Gio, good luck on the repair.

Hey guys.

We sorted it all out. Went to honda wreck and got another spring (thanks crxer). The old bolt had basically swallowed the ball bearing cause there was no spring in there. The bolt was therefor warped and the spring was MIA.

We threw out the old bolt+ball bearing and put in the new spring, ball bearing and bolt. Works like a charm. Thanks so much guys :D

Chris.

Beeza says thanks lads too.

VERY LUCKY!

I have a feeling you guys filled the gearbox through the gearbox 'breather' tube?

That would've taken FOREVER! lol

Funny dudes. Catch you at the meet Chris ;)

Haha, yeah,we couldn't find the filler hole cause the manual is wasy different than my auto :)

But Phew,yeah,all good!!

A bit of a clean, cold air ducting (we bought the bits today) and adjust the tappets and it looking good.I didn't have my small rachit on me to get the rear bolt on the cam cover off.Anyone with a y4 and probably all d-series would know of the bastard bolt I mean. You need a small rachit with the 90 degree kinky socket bit and a 10mm socket.I would be suprised to hear anyone has got that sucker off any other way?!

I would still like to grind the rivets off the tps sensor, replace them with bolts and set the tps voltage.THEN she will be running good!

btw we:

* Replaced the fuel filter
* Oil filter and oil
* Transmission fluid (just hehe)
* Suburu upper engine cleaner
* cleaned the spark plugs and spark plug cylinder holes (bit of carby cleaner and tissues down the shutes.Swirl it around a bit then drag it out.Works like a charm!)
* Adjusted idle via the idle adjust screw,it was low,so it just needed to be turned out until it idle fine.
* Swapped tyres,front to back,back to front.
* Got rid of some emissions crap.
* Cleaned air filter (just tap the crap out, then vacumn it if you wish)
* Cleaned the contact points in the dizzy (Flat screwdriver) and rotor edge (sand paper)
* Degreased and cleaned the engine bay!!

hehe GOOD TIMES!!

Apart from the transmission :) Chris's engine is the same.

How did you get the dents out omgzilla?

Using rods down the panels he gently massages the dent back outwards.

Youtube: "paintless dent removal" and you'll get the idea.

If the car wasn't black and most of the dents weren't on crease-lines in the panels i'd have a shot at it myself (seen the guy do it tonnes of times at work).

It's actually pretty interesting to watch. Good money maker too!
