Hi all,
Just want to find out what D16Y4 EK1 owners do to get the oil filter loose. I've tried using my hands and it's too hard to come off. I've also used the 3-claw type wrench and it's still too tight.
As you can imagine it's quite hard to access the filter as it's right at the back of the block, underneath the intake.
Anyone care to share their own technique in getting this bugger of a part out?
Cheers
Done this today man.
Jack the car up and stab a screwdriver through the old filter and use the screw driver to undo it. OR goto honda (if the filter is oem honda) and get a oil filter removal tool.
Chris.

Yeah its a pain to get out. Bare hands didnt work for me either.
I had to buy the tool that belt wrapped around the filter.

if you can't remove the oil filter with your hands and a bit of force your either weak, or the last person who serviced it done it up too tight, only reason why people do it up too tight is because their paranoid
lol mine was oversized and done up way to tight.

the honda oil filter removal tool is heaps good u jus slide it on and use a 17mm spanner to loosen the filter but yea for sure go from under the car not the top its easier in the long run

unless someones used a tool to put it on. bastards. what a stupid idea.
OEM Honda tool is good if you're using a honda filter. I've got one of the oil filter wrenches and its a paint with the minimal amount of room on the honda. It works good on the barina though (filter is at the front of the engine with plenty of room)

You could try putting some thick rubber bands over it for more grip

Yea electricians tape works wonders, wrap a few layers round the filter and sometimes this is just enough to get it off, its also alot cheaper :)

Try a brand of filter that has a 'captured nut' on the end. Removing the filter is as simple as using a socket and rachet...no special removal tool required.
Both 'K&N' and 'Drift performance' oil filters have this feature... however they are more expensive than regular aftermarket brands (eg Ryco), but when the filter is in a difficult location to access I've found it worth it.

That's a great idea!
That would work sweet!
Nice thread, i've had a 94 civic since feb and two oil changes had me going insane with the oil filter... just wanted to see if there are any other ideas other than screwdriver and electrical tape... ohh and express my annoyance with the problem :)
cheers

best ideas i have heard are..
dish washing gloves if you are able to apply brute force method.
oh but make sure you dont put them back in the kitchen lol
screw driver also seems to be really effective, just use a hammer if ur aim is bad lol

Make sure you put a bit of oil on the seal and tighten it by hand. It should come out no problem next time.

ohhh fuk i gotta get me one of those!!
and yes anything with grip is good, but i'm a tall bloke with long arms and there isn't too much room to wiggle around under the car... i hate the screw driver bcoz it gets messy... it just strikes me as a stupid location for the filter, especially since the oil drips all over the axles etc once you remove it... design fail imo

ive got something like this, but the loop is canvas material... its never let me down unless i wasnt the person who did the filter up the last time... i do it hand tight and then check for any leaks after ive run the motor... as stated about, make sure you put a light film of oil on the seal, and i also give the filter mount and its surrounds a quick wipe down with a rag

yeah i find that tool and anything similar useles on even more accessible filters, i've worked on a WRX and a magna and either way they were useles, can never seem to get a good grip on the filter... :)
