View Full Version : Engine Oils
Hi OZ:honda: members,
Im sorry to ask and repeat the question but what engine oil will be good for my car? 1993 eg vti.
I dont know whether to go for 5/10- 30W+, I know that 10 is more thicker but would it make much of a difference i terms of driving/street performance. Whats better off for me?
So from experience could you suggestion a or some brands that you would recommend and price aswel. Im looking for Fully Synthetic ones:thumbsup:
Ive used the search button but i couldn't really decide on which to get.
Much Appreciated:angel:

The first number indicates how thin the oil is when it's cold while the second number indicates the "base" thickness when it's warmer. the difference with synthetic oils is that it doesnt thicken up when its cold so starting the car is faster and its easier on the battery. But generally, 5w-30, 10w-30 and 10w-40 have been around for a long time and they are the most common choices. probably wouldn't wanna go too low like 5-20w as it might be too thin and supposedly damages your engine. i use the OEM honda oil - reccommended is FEO high performance oil. about $30 for 5L from your local honda dealer.
Castrol Edge 5w30 is on sale at Repco for $35 atm, real bargain at that price.
Not sure the condition of your engine ie it might be too thin and burns too much and/or leak past seals that are not the best etc.
Only way to find out is to try, you'll love the slippery nature of this oil and the extra throttle response you'll get from a thin syn slippery oil, saves you 0.1-0.2L of fuel per 100km too over mineral 10W40.

Like they said, get yourself 3 bottles of Castrol Edge 5w-30 from Repco for $35 while it is on sale. Good shit, better than mineral oils with a similar price (Honda FEO, Magnatec, Mobil S).

Edge 5w-30 is better than 4100 Turbolight. Turbolight is a semi synthetic with a mineral base. In terms of ranking, 8100 Xcess > Edge 5w-30 > 4100 Turbolight. That's the reason why Turbolight is cheap. It probably lasts as long as Mobil S or a bit better than Magnatec/FEO.

If you wanna stick with Motul try 300v Power Racing. It's a double ester blended 5w-30. Don't expect it to be cheap though.

i had magnatec 10w40 before...it burnt like crazy in my car, around 650ml/1000km. after doing 7500km on turbolight my oil usage was 350ml/1000km..i was pretty happy...the semisyn oil must of helped quite a bit...
i wonder if castrol edge 5w30 will help with reducing my oil consumption further even though it's thinner than the turbolight at operating temp...
so the question is will i burn less using fullsyn 5w30 than semisyn 10w40?

i think you got something wrong with your engine dude. Ive been using castrol edge for the last 2-3000ks and the oil line has barely moved.

when i first got my car i used FEO. i didn't know preludes burn oil but the car revved much faster after the oil change. after that i went with 10w40 magnatec mineral oil and now motul 10w40 semi syn.
i wonder how i'll go with castrol edge 5w30..

If you have oil leaks, blowby and a worn out PCV valve, don't expect the engine oil to solve the problem. It might reduce oil consumption slightly, but it won't be a solution to the problem. At best, it will be a bandaid fix.

i'm not concerned about my oil consumption. if my engine didn't have external leaks i would be loosing probably around 250-300ml/1000km. i'm perfectly fine with that considering most prelude owners report oil loss of 500-1000ml/1000km...
since the castrol edge is cheap i thought i'd give it a try but my question is will the edge 5w30 burn less than turbolight 10w40?
is the synthetic property of the edge better than the extra 10 weight of the turbolight?
if it's not good in my car then no problems...my gf's EK civic can use it...her car doesn't even burn much FEO and it costs $35-40 from the local Honda dealer.

Get it for your gf's car then and pinch one bottle to try on your car.
BTW, went to my local repco and they are already sold out.
