heavy duty degreaser, the trick is the let the degreaser soak, but the stuff i use at work, if you leave it for more then 5 odd minutes your paint will start stripping,,,,

LOl you can't get something to shine by using degreser. at least try using a gerni,,,,

Thats either residue from the degreaser or the alloy reacting to the degreaser.
Try some Inox spray will make it shine
Wax and grease remover is good for gums and grease as well. Put some on a rag and rub away....

th white chalky residue is actually the remnants of your degreaser... that is the issue with using it all over your bay, it will be more pronounced on alloy parts. The only way to get rid of it is to use a rag with some prepsol / polish.

You wont be able to get the paint on your rocker to shine because it is not a shiney/glass finish... but you can get it clean with some prepsol and a rag

When i detail my bay i follow these steps

1) With a plastic bag, cover the alternator / alarm / stereo fuse
2) Spray degreaser around the bay, mostly onthe lower parts of the engine
3) Spray off with high pressue hose
4) remove plastic bags, and turn motor on until its warm, to get rid of all the water in hard to reach areas
5) Wipe down and remove remaining water
6) polish all paint areas (1, 2 or 3 step depending on how keen i am)
7) treat all rubbers and plastics with some rubber/vinyl treatment to get them black and shiney again. This includes all hoses in the bay. For dirty ones, it might help to hit them with some cleaning agent like prepsol first
8) hit any metal, such as an intake, strut brace etc with some metal polish
9) Wipe down any other areas with some prepsol to remove degreser residue

Following this, i will run over the bay with a damp rag at every wash to keep it clean.

I haven't done this in a while as i dont have time, but your bay will look immaculate for long periods if you follow this...

Dishwashing liquid. Lots of it!

I just use the cheap $2 degreaser which works wonders. Might need a toothbrush to get the stubborn parts. Just make sure you don't get water in the spark plug wells.

love the smell of threadomancy in the morning ...

use Autoglym Rubber and Vinyl Care for all the rubber bits
use Autoglym Engine and Machine Cleaner for all metal bits
use cheap degreaser for caked up crap
use BlueJob for stainless parts
use CRC Contact Cleaner for any electronic components
and i do all that with chucks cloth =p

Don't use degreaser/spray your rocker cover anyway, you will risk water leaking into the spark plug cavity because the spark lead seals are probably old and not super-tight. This will make the car drive like crap, accelerate very poorly, run rough etc.

Do the rocker cover by hand.

Everything else I'd just try the degreaser and give it a good smash.

Even better just wrap the end of a air compressor with a towel and blast some air into the cavity so it splashes up into the towel.

But still, it's a PITA, and so I avoid hitting the rocker cover when I degrease my bay.

I use Meguire's plastic trim detailer on black plastics/hoses. Meguire's metal polish on the shiny bits. Polish the underside of the bonnet (removed that crappy cover, looks awesome).

I use inox and degreaser to clean engine bays, spray them both on and let them soak for 5 then spray off with a garden hose with your finger over the end, repeat if necessary, i dont like using high pressure as it tends to get the water in places you dont want, if you have a build up of oil/grease i usualy rub it with a rag/toothbrush while its soaking. heres some before and after pics of the process on a dusty civic, ive just done what i stated above twice and didnt use any other polishes or trim detailer at that point in the pics as it was just to show the cleaning.

best bet would be degreaser . if you want your rocket cover shiny take it off (undo the bolts) wash it under wash and scrub it wish a bush and some soapy water . let it dry and see if that helps. if not then best bet would be sand it off (shouldn't take too long) back to bare metal and then make it whatever color you want it. NOTE: if painting your rocket cover .. use heat proof paint. hope this helps
