Okay this isn't a ****ing around thread! My car is my life and I have no one around to help me at the moment. My handbrake light wont turn off on the dash! Im worried! When I get out of the car it smells, the handbreak is fully down and wont go down any further. Please do not give me your bullshit as Im seriously just in need of a hand urgently. This is my only for of transport for the week!

did u feel the car on hand brake when you drive slowly (dragging)?

try checking the brake fluid level (they might run on the same line) and check handbrake cables as well.

and if the pads retracts normally and the light is still on. then it will be your handbrake switch

i say one of your rear calipers have seized up and won't unclamp from the rotor.
does your handbrake still feel normal when you pull it up?

If so might not be your handbrake end and more on the mechanical end of it so either brake fluid seizing from air bubbles etc, piston and caliper seizing due to the spring(located at the caliper end) that engages and disengages from the handbrake cable etc.

It's happened to me, but due to someone pulling the handbrake too hard.

Check your brake fluid level first, it may be low. Other wise the hand brake handle (lever) switch may not be working :)

The light is an indicator of whether your hand brake handle is up or down and not on its operational condition. The handbrake light generally in most cars are also used to indicated low brake fluid level, hence why I said to check it.

Good luck!

cheers for that fellas..

as for the questions:

- Sometimes it feels like its still gripping but I dont now if thats just me feeling things that isnt happening because im worried.
-I rang Ryan [EK1.6LCIV] last night when i got home and told him what was going on, He said check the fluid and it seems pretty good to me from what I knew....

Im quite the mecaniclly challenged... so I will admit defeat and pretty much say I have no idea whats going!

All I can say was the other week I was driving some drunk mates to a party and the one in the front of my car wouldnt stop ****ing around with shit and kept pulling my handbreak up, if maybe thats an indication of whats going on?

awwwww, you poor thing.

Those bastard drums :p

Yeah, your cable/hand brake needs an adjustment (could tell from the carwash actually)

Do the following:

Flush Brakes
Top up Fluid
Adjust handbrake
Change front pads (if they're due)

Maybe replace the Drum Shoes.

Ryan should be able to give you a hand :p

p.s half of the worry is paranoia, stop it.

p.s.s you need to get dirty girl, go get the jack and jackstands and do this shit at Ryans.

one of your cables may be sticking

you say it smelt so i'd be looking at the brakes (they may be stuck on slightly)

or it could be the lollie wrappers i stuck in your brakes :p

if you was closer i'd offer to come have a look for you but i'm enjoying watching V8 shopping trolleys on my day off

try putting the car in neutral with the hand brake off and see if it's any harder to push that it normally is

Edit: oh and next time some knob pulls your hand brake, you pull over reach past them open the door give them the look and ask "how d fark you gettin home?"

maybe your fish knows the answer? They're quite intelligent you know!

Just pull it apart and replace everything. i'm sure you'll fix the problem. :p

Now for the serious answer :

Do what everyone has said above!

ok... This happened to me before, but everybodys car is different... My problem was where the cable goes through the floor in the car...

I had a pen lid/some wierd piece of plastic getting stuck when releasing the handbrake (In the gap where the handbrake wire goes through the floor). This would cuase the wire to get stuck and keep tension on the side of the brakes, and lose tension and feel as though it was off on the handbrake leaver side...

So just another thing to check on your diagnostics....

thats another one of the things i was thinking of too....

because whoever was yanking the handbrake the cables may hav stretched...
