So I'm looking into purchasing speakers as I'm guessing the stock Civic EK speakers just wont cut it but is it really worth buying a new set of speakers, eg; Alpine or Pioneer if I'm wanting better bass/crisper sound? Or will I only achieve better bass by shoving a sub woofer in the back etc? (I'm a noob when it comes to this but I do like my bass :D I'll most likely buy a new head unit too) Looks like it'll be for a stock 99 EK Civic Hatch. Thanks!

(To simplify it will replacing stock Civic speakers with Pioneer/Alpine speakers drastically improve sound quality and bass?)

Get a headunit first and see how the speakers go.. usually if you buy a brand new head unit like alpine pioneer, kenwood it will gives out a better sound quality than stock head unit.

if you looking for bass you should get atleast one sub to give sound quality. a set of split speakers in the front and 6x9 at the back. Will be good enough to start with.. Life style store are on sale today in nth parra (if your in syd if ur not in syd ignore this lol)

i agree on the comment above.... OEM head units normally makes it sound better coz of the watts.... i installed a decent sony head unit for my wife's car it only cost me $120 and it did the trick.... better bass and treble....

but if you want to be fully sick brooo.... invest on a nice head unit amps splits and rear speakers and u be booming....

plus after market head unit has more feature to adjust the sound in bass mid treable bass level and other features that you wont find in all after market headunit.

and mars_panas is right aswell  they come usually in 45x4, 50x4 60x4 depends on the model

I have a 99Civic hatch.

Started out by changing the Headunit.

Then changed the rear speakers and added an amp
Found I wasn't getting enough bass that way. On certain songs, there was too much bass and the rear 6x9's were making a 'knocking noise' which meant that the speakers were taking too much bass and jumping out of their cone.

Have now fully upgraded by adding a sub and front splits. The sound is amazing. You get enough bass and never get that knocking noise from the speakers taking too much bass.

Hope that helps u.

Good luck

isnt Ek hatches has 6x9 stock? at the back?

You might need to replace that too so that you dnt have a piece missing..

And the only thing missing after the installation is the tuning of your sound.. How do you want it..:)

oh didnt notice a ek hatch was mentioned. yup theyre 6x9s in the rear, just tryna point out that vbomb should do the other things first before focusing on 6x9s - especially if he wants "better bass/crisper sound".

agree, aslong you got the sub and the amp and a good head unit.. you can live wit stock speakers and still get the quality and you can take it from there.. if still not satisfied then you replace the stock speakers.. gud luck

EK hatch doesn't come with 6 x 9's at the back. Same speakers as at the front.

BUT you can easily install 6x9's.

Well he can have the stock 6x9 and after market 6x9 mounted in that wood thing on the back and connect that from the amp.. if he wanted to..

It wont make a difference to the soudsn if you only change your speakers becasue the ehad unit will still but giving the same output. Tto get a better sound you have to change the stock speakers but you also have to amp them. Buying a new head deck may improve the sound because after market head units usually have a greater output then stock ones. The best way to improve the bass from your speakers is to amp them. Deffinately is you want good bass go for a sub, but if you are just looking for clean bass and dont want to spend too much on it change the rear speakers to 6x9's and amp them. If you get a set of 6x9 it will improve the bass a lot.

Good luck mate

Where would be the best place to put 2 10" or 12" subs? I was thinking if I could have them installed INTO the rear seats. One thing I don't want is to have a box sitting in the boot with a sub, just looks far too tacky to me.

Thanks for the replies!

umm...what? the speakers have the BIGGEST impact on the end result sound...

about placement of the subs. you'd only wanna mount them on the rear seats if you could seal off the boot area. then the boot would effectively be the box of the sub. otherwise, box inthe boot is by far the best option.

sound deadening will make a lot of difference. you can make $400 speakers with SD, sound better than $800 speakers with out SD

forget 6*9 if your plan to get a sub... they are a total waste of money.

if your after decent sound, i suggest the following:

after market head unit with 2 pre outs at least.
splits with sound deadening at the front,
stock rears
sub (10/12 in) depending on budget and how much boot space you want and
4 ch amp for powering splits and the sub.

i know there a few items on the list and i'm not sure about your budget. if you do some research and get right advise, you can always add the components over a period of time and you'll be pleased with the end result.
