I have had my 96 Civic VTi-R for a month now, its still stock apart from the air filter i have added myself. Im not really a know all engine guy but this is my problem...

Thanks to the air filter it as really given the vtec a nice grunt... but after crusing in the city, and seeing another civic vti-r, i am not totally happy with my the sound my car produces after 4500rpm (i guess compared to this other civic my car just sounds like it getting the shit rev'ed outta it).... this civic i saw had a totally differant sound to my car? it had more of that vtec sound, that sound which i can really explain? How do i get more out of my vtec? or is this just the sound the b16a produces? maybe the civic had a transplant? is there anything i can do to get a better vtec sound?

sorry if this sound really stupid!

full exhaust would of made a big difference to the sound compared to yours. and possibly headers. its hard to say what the other guy has done without seeing it or asking him.

There's alot of things that can be done for the VTEC sound to be exaggerated. Setanta has the same engine as me in his EF and just has a drop in panel filter (i think!!) and his car sounds very very nice on vtec!!

mmm Pete, do you have an exhaust on ur car?? i can't remember..

umm i have the same car and have done the same thing.
btw vtec when in action is revving the shit out of the engine but rest assured its totally safe and the car loves it

chances are the other civic had their stock boxes in. Its louder because you have removed the little sound resonator.

install an ITR intake plenom and you will here the vtec from the next suburb!

what exactly is an intake plenom? cause im liking the fact that people will hear me from the next suburb!

i should actually call it an intake manifold! here is a pic of a JDM ITR item

okay, sweet thanks for all this help guys...

now here are the boring questions?
where can i shop around for one of these manifolds? roughly how much? and is it a big job to get them put in?

Thanks
ps: now you got me all pumped!

b16 and itr IM is the same thing except the itr one is ported out
do NOT think changing IM will make it sound better!

mugen exhaust will amplify the vtec sound loud and nice :P

you are aware than VTEC in VTiR kicks in at 5,600 RPM.. so at 4,500 you are just getting regular engine noise.. hit 5,600RPM and should sound like someone starting-up a chainsaw !!!

Short-Ram intake tube with Pod filter = LOTS of VTEC noise.

a tuned induction pipe will make a big difference, i think thats what theyre called.

bede civic vtir doesn't have the dual intake manifold

Tanghy .. ummm wtf ?
who said anything about a dual intake manifold ?
Bede was talking about my car !

issit? he makes it sound like he's talking abt a dual intake

doesnt the ITR have longer runners, larger plenom and not to mention larger TB?

not really

60mm vs 62mm?

60mm vs 62mm?
That 2mm increase in airflow will not make any difference in the sound volume.
Great sales pitch tho :P

a larger TB or a large IM does NOT mean MORE NOISE

noise comes from a pod on a stick, esp short rams

LOL - and while you are installing the ITR manifold, you better get a VTEC BOV too - it'll make it sound fully sic bro

"Hear the VTEC" - too much F&F for some people :P

ok the more noise was a piss-take obviously...
but from what i know there is a fair difference between a itr IM and b16a....

tanghy
17-11-2003, 04:58 PM
the itr im is ported for better airflow

i'm 99% certain that the itr im has shorter and fatter runners which aid in top-end

MrPlow

so what would be the best way to do this?

Install the ITG intake manifold? Get the current manifold ported? or leave it as is?

get extractors n catback n hiflow cat
they make more diff to gaining power

loud sound...?
you'll need a combo of cams, headers and exhaust system..ditch the ITR IM, if you want LOUDNESS.....get quad throttle bodies!

I've got a unifilter pod and a Hi-Tech cat-back exhaust wit a cannon muffler and resonator on my Civic.

Sounds bloody loud when VTEC pops! :o

Tanghy, can you stop repeating yourself with the above quote. Yes im sure your right but it isnt always the answer to EVERYTHING.
please keep it related to the topic of the intake manifold. There is a thread for extractors elsewhere

i thought the topic was VTEC SOUND....

i think u should get catback like hansons.....

k3nnis: Can you explain how VTEC feels like when it kicks in? Does it pin you back to the seat a little bit like a turbo?
sejanus: Imagine a incredibly tiny small turbo that for some bizarre reason takes 5500-6000rpm to make boost, and so small that it makes bugger all power, just an increase in noise :P

Truer words have never been spoken :P

c'mon, someone bite
