Hi guys, just wanna seek some opinions.

I know those cf hoods are illegal in Australia, but does the vents really help in anyway? Or is it just a look good hole for that extra JDM bling?

Thanks so much for the feedback!!

I would expect that both scoops (to suck cool air into the engine bay) and vents (to remove hot air from the engine bay) would be useful, but only to certain extents. If you found where your engine bay was hottest and put a scoop above that area, and vented any pockets that had warm air, you'd probably help prolong the life of your engine by a day or two :p but then you'd have a very odd looking bonnet with scoops and vents in random places. I'm fairly sure that engines would be designed with such heat in mind though, so I doubt that having the heat there would do much harm. That said, it can't hurt to have a cooler engine bay.

However, I would also expect that most enthusiasts (not ricers :p) would move to carbon fibre to remove excess weight from their car, not for "bling" (like I would expect from a ricer who has no idea about how to mod a car properly :p). As such, carbon fibre isn't really rice, but a performance mod... even though most carbon fibre hoods do carry vents and scoops for the "bling" factor to increase sales. However, as described above, the vents would probably do a little bit of good. The warm air might help in keeping your windscreen from fogging up too... but don't quote me on that because it's pure speculation :p If you buy me a carbon fibre bonnet, I can test the claims for you... free of charge :D

Edit:
Fixed up a spelling mistake.

yeah. Not just looking. It can remove hot air from the engine bay and reduce your car's weight. Good for performance and looking!!

dont see the point of it if people buy it for looks...might as well paint ur bonnet black....it does remove alot of weight off ur car....

are u serious the CF bonnets are illegal in Aus?? or is that just rumour?/

btw i wouldnt call it a performance mod, you are only saving a few kilos. You could go on a diet and lose a few kg and call that performance mod too!! lol

If your CF bonnets passed in Transport, it's legal. If not, that's illegal.

sorry i didint bother reading the long post.. so i dunno if anyone has said this...
but as far as jdm goes, i didnt know bonnet scoops were classified in the same field. apart from possibly evos and wrxs (are those even japanese?), no japanese domestic market cars - hondas anyways - have bonnet scoops?

jdm, is being thrown around as much as the term rice lol

i personally like the OEM shape CF hoods. vents are a bit too fast and furious for my likings. i think they DO let in, or let out air, which is guess is ok? i dunno.

Scoops are on the WRXs and EVOs because of the top mount intercooler

After watching alot of BMi videos where they take some pretty hardcore modded cars (NA) to extreems, i dont remember seeing many if any vents/scoops ... so i take it if these profesional drivers, drivings fully customized cars by spoon, amuse, jun (just to name a few) to its limits and still dont feel the need for vents/scoops then i dont think they do much if anything... thats my reasoning/understanding

to tell u guys the truth i dont know y they are illegal in aussie, i got one for my car recently and it has the same structural frame as the standard bonet, now if this is the reason that they are illegal then shouldnt body kits be illegal?, as far as i know bodykits dont have the same structural strength as the standard bumpers.
maybe someone can enlighten me?

also my bonnet is a few kilos lighter than the stock one, but to tell u the truth i bought mine more for the look rather than the performance, if it was for performance i would have spent that $650 elswhere

they are illegal because they havent been ADR certified. If the manufacturer does bother to get them certified they would be legal.

Unless the RTA is really looking to screw you, or you've pissed them off, i doubt you'd be pulled up for it though

I dunno y no one has mentioned the fact that if ur involved in a crash and a part of ur car body isnt ADR approved then you wont be insured? As in the other party would have their car paid for by your insurance, but if u suffer engine damage then they can claim it was cos ur CF bonnet wasnt up to spec. This happened to my cousin HK

I got defected my QLD police for my bonnet. I also have the standard frame liek the standard one.. but they ask me to cut the bonnet apart and send to do a crash test. wtf ? if i pass the test i can get the same material and get the mod plate in Queensland transport... that was a ripe off.. $225 fine.

Reason why CF bonnets are illegal is because they do not crumble when in an accident like a stock bonnet would. Instead it will shatter into little CF bonnets pieces, which might inturn fly in all different directions, going through a window or hitting a pedestrian etc.

Mabey all the QLD civic owners should put in $50 each to buy a sacrificial CF bonnet and send it to do the crash test. Then we can all get legal CF bonnets:D

Hey if you can get away with it, then put one on? Every second car these days has oversized rims on them and unless you are very unlucky you'll get away with it too!
