Thinking of buying a rear lip for my 99 EK Civic and was told that this lip would fit so I'm wondering how do I self install? Or is it pretty much a 'bolt on'? Also anyone know if they're fairly easy to paint, sand/primer/paint like you would a panel? Thanks :)

if its made for the same year and model, it should be direct bolt on.

its very east to paint i just finished my own DIY project of painting my side skirts and rear lip. took me about half a day to paint and i let it dry over night to make sure the paint fully hardened.

its easy, these are the steps i took and it turned out perfect.

1.Sand
2.Prime
3.Sand
4.Paint
4.5. Sand (only if u stuff up, if u do step 4 again.)
5. Gloss X2

may i ask what type of paint you used riced_civic?
was is a premix from a can or proper paint then sprayed on with a spray gun?

Might want to add
1.Sand (400 grit) then a quick 800 grit
2.Prime
3.Sand (800 grit) then higher (if you are fussy) if there are still bumps or divots, prime and sand again, also might want to leave primer to dry overnight in a well heated and dry room or atleast a dry room
4.Paint and let dry overnight well heated and dry room
4.5. Sand (only if u stuff up, if u do step 4 again.)
5. Gloss X2

I'm also planning on removing the side black panels too - Would this be sufficient you guys think?
http://i28.tinypic.com/2eevs5g.jpg

- Pull off the black panels (I won't be needing them)
- Tape off the area with some newspaper around it
- Sand it back using 400 grit then 800 grit
- Fill the holes from the panels with a filler, wipe - sand smooth when dry
- Primer
- 800 Grit sand
- Primer
- 2 Coats of factory white paint
- 1 Coat of gloss paint if needed

Hopefully.. good as new? :D It's either that or consider hiring the 'touch up guys' - basically a mobile service that come out and paint specific areas ..fairly good pricing too/free quotes - I remember they fixed up my dads bumper a while back.

I'd take the easy way out if it's a reasonable price but it'd take out the fun when you can dyi.

Yeah true eh .. I might just get him out and see what he'll charge

They come very well prepared though, they have a computer in the van which colour codes certain paints and sets up a tent-like thing wherever hes working

its not that hard! its all "bolt on" just make sure u let the lip sit tight, i once didn't do it right and the mid of my lip was moving up n down. make sure u paint it befor the fit too.

here is a DIY paint job from a member here hope this helps

How do you attach them? Do you jack the car up or ..?
And why does everyone prefer different grades of sandpaper? :(

Wish I could just spray it white.. lol

sanding is up to you and depends how well u want it to turn out.

u dont need to jack up the car unless ur dumped to the max.

What about
1. 400 Grit sanding
2. Primer
3. 3 coats of gloss white?

:)

should be fine as long as u dont do it super heavy.

if it doest start to drip let it dry fully and sand with finer sandpaper and reapply again.

Thats what I dont understand, how do I choose what sand paper to use? I've honestly heard something different from EVERYONE
and I've never really sanded anything besides wood

Thanks for the reply!

well the finer it is the smoother it will come out.

say u use a very abrasive sand paper and do a light coat over it u will still see the sanding marks. as when u use a very fine sand paper and do a light coat it wont show and the paint will grip to it. the same applies to wood and lacquer (clear varnish) if u dont sand it properly it will turn out crap and u will c the sanding marks as where if u sane it after with fine sand paper it will turn out nice and clean.

in saying that use finer grit paper

to do it properly they should use plastic primer especially on ABS where the lip can flex, otherwise the paint falls off after a while in chunks. I know cos my friend(smash repairs spray painter) explained it to me when he did my front lip.

FIrst you use wet & dry a 4000 grade so its nice and smooth, otherwise any imperfections will come out when painted

Then plastic primer

Then paint (usually at least 2 coats) & clear

Thanks guys :D

What if you got the black lip by itself and then just gave it a coat of gloss paint? That work too? I think my EK1 came stock with black side skirts so was thinking of maybe just having a black lip on the back (or white) we'll see.

if its black just add the gloss it should be fine with out sanding
