I'm making this thread for Chris (gio) cause he cant get to a computer.
Somebody scraped the rear of his car today (behind the rear wheel on the bumper) at Uni and drove off.Somebody saw this happen and got the guys details and left them on Chris's car. This 'witness' also left his own details.
OK,so should Chris contact the person who hit him or the police?
I like to deal with issues personnally and not have authority in on it but he could possibly deny it then the cops will be involved but he may have a plan in place then to get out of it??
What to do guys?

Best to contact the police and report a hit and run, with witness in hand.
Then once the police report has been filed, contact your insurance company and lodge a claim against that person with the police report number, your insurance company will then have the car repaired and chase the other party down to recover the costs.
The police will also chase the other party down and charge them with a hit and run.
How about if some one rear ended me and gave me his details on the spot. I don't need to report to the police do I? I'm on 3rd party and hes with Just Car.

No you wouldn't need to call the police unless one of the vehicles was undriveable or if someone was injured.
In your case he needs to lodge a claim with his insurance company, then he provides you with the claim number. Once that's done you just take your car for a couple of quotes, or take it to a panel beater who will deal with the insurance company for you, and they'll perform the repairs under the other person's claim number.
Oh thanks hmm so the very first thing is for them to get the claim number. I was going to go and get some quotes first because he wants to decide whether private or insurance claim due to the excess vs cost thingo. Thanks for help and thread! haha.

Yeah in that case just take it to a couple of panel beaters and get them to give you a free quote, then the guy can decide to settle with insurance or just pay you out with cash. :D

He just has 'accident to other vehicles' insurance? What happens there?

So he just has 3rd party insurance, its exactly the same process in this case.
He needs to file an insurance claim and provide you with the claim number, then you get your car fixed under that claim number. Only difference is that he can't get his own car fixed under that claim number since it's only 3rd party insurance :p

I get it,it's thier insurance that will pay for the damage to Chris's car,so all good/right.
Thanks geeang!!
Im on the computers at robina shopping centre lol.
Thanks for all the help beez and geeang.
Went to the popo who called him and said fix it or u get done for a hit and run, imo he should have got done anyway, slack fkr.
lol oh umm I think this relates to the original Q too ... but if the other party at fault claims insurance.. then BOTH our excesses go up. Is that correct?
