ok guys.. ive been having trouble fixing a leak in my headers and i just changed the exhaust manifold gasket. took it for a drive let it warm up and for about 15 minutes the vtec engagement was very loud.. not that im complaining, it sounded ****ing epic. but has gone back to normal now, the leaky droney shit sound it was before.. i asked a mate whos pretty switched on about hondas and hes never heard of this happeneing.. any insight?
also will add the engine sound was exactly the same as it is now when it was happening, was only when vtec kicked in yo
cheers,
roy

the pitch of the vtec crossover sound can be altered by sumthing as small as the air temperature
after letting her warm up then running it into vtec then trying again and again
the intake manifold will be getting hotter and hotter...
i notice that mine with my SRI it is insanely loud on cold mornings
then in the afternoon still loud but not as harsh as in the morning
that could be one reason... others can be misc problems
i.e vtec solenoid, ecu probs, air temp sensor lalalalalist goes on...
or maybe its just ears getting used to the noise???
\maybe the cats sick
\headers are leaking again...?
\oxy sensor?

Actually, isn't sound supposed to be easier to travel in the cold?
What you posted does make sense (in a way) but figured I'd let you know/ask the question...

try cleaning your vtec solinoid oil filter, you may not even be getting it into vtec (the droning sound) which could mean its blocked... or you dont have enough oil, or oil pressure.... Altough im sure you could feel it if it wasnt...
good luck

your exhaust and cat work differently and different temperatures too. when mine is cold is rasps right up top when its warm/hot not rasp. the steel sound dampening materials inside muffler work better at high temps.
more importantly, does it really matter how it sounds?
