Hey yall

Took my car to Midas to get the oil leak fixed. Was timing belt cover seal or whatever..

I said to them so the leak is fixed etc I dont want any more oil leaks they said nah its good to go. I made sure I asked because if I didn't and it still leaked they could have said oh but its this other thing

They charged me like 500 to fix it, 3 x 100 p/h labour (3 hrs) plus parts etc and a timing belt..

Now its starting to leak again from the same area

Not as bad, but still enough that my oil level is sittin slightly lower than when it was refilled with oil

Question - do I have a right to take it back and make them fix it again with not paying any more? On their receipt it says all work comes with a warranty so I hope this is the case

Cheers

Timing belt cover seal.

What?

Belt driven cars dont need a seal on the timing cover.

Read your receipt and see what work was carried out.

Can you physically see where your leak is coming from? Or are you just speculating that it is coming from there.
Your engine could be burning oil.

More details on work carried out.
3hours worth of labour is pretty long. You can do a major service in that time.

Woops wrong section too, mods please move to N00b or technical please..

Cant find the reciept here but I have it somewhere, they said timing cover or some crap like that..

It was leaking oil heavily when i brought it in, and yes they did stop the leakage but yeah I know its from the same spot as I looked under and its dripping from the passenger side near the block dripping down next to the passenger front wheel..

Well anyway, I told them fix the leak ,and now the leak back, so pretty much should they fix it for free? or will they say tough luck

Could be residue from the previous leak. Wash it down and re check it.

OR get them to wash it down and check it.

Dont think so as it didnt leak a drop for a while and now starting to leak a few drops...

They degreased the whole engine and now that I look under there is oil again so thats what is telling me its leaking again :(

I have the same problem atm, its a seal, wasnt seated properly

if you clean it over a week it'll be at the same point of the problem is like mine

they'll fix it under warranty, there's plenty of incentives to get them to do it right, one phone call to their head of operations gets them motivated

I never understood the charge out rates in this country, when 9/10 its some 17-19yo apprentice doing the fking job and they still charge 75-100hr

In heinsight, I wouldve been better biting the bullet and paying $350 more dollars to Honda to do the task, as they wouldve seated the seals properly first go, instead of having to go back to my other mech, I tell ya what this apprentice 2moro is getting a talking to in the morning before he has a chance to put his lunch in the fking fridge...

its ethier the cam or crank seal, happens when novices touch these cars, more common probelm than you may believe

Give the apprentice a break.

Everyones gota learn somehow. If he doesnt make mistakes, how is he going to learn.

apprentices have to learn at a tafe not on customers cars paying good money

my mech is still great, used to be a Honda techy up north, been using him for yrs, but hes recently had to hire apprentices as good mechs are immpossible to find as they get paid fk all unless theyre diesel mechs in the mines

its a shit trade and shit service as most are undervalued and under paid

as long as u dont go to someones backyard youre ok :) if in Syd go to Hannys or something

Just letting you know apprentices mainly learn theory at Tafe. Only a small part is practical work. Not until their working at a shop is when they put that theory into practice.

And everyone makes mistake. Give him a break. Whats harassing him going to do! Apart from him sabotaging your car!

You chose to take your car there = your fault:D

Take it back to Midas and determine what the issue (leak) is? When that is figured out, I'm sure Midas will do the right thing and if its their fault they should/will fix it.

I'm sure you got the usual cam/crank seal and TBelt job. Leak could just be rocker cover for all we know.

"Do not" take it to another mechanic yet. Cause there will be a whole bunch of finger pointing and only person who loses out is you!

Hope it works out!

For now the leak has stopped.. the issue is it could develop again a few months down the track when consequently the warranty of the labour/parts would of run out by then

I kept all the papers/recipets so Ill just keep a close eye on my oil level and the leak and if it persists any further I will take it straight back to them.

And your right about calling HQ opertions, I did tht to a mechanic at k mart tyre n auto who tried to stich me a few hundred dollars extra than norml

Thnks all for the advice!

he got told this morning to shape up his act, his employer was contacted (one of the job agencies), they like getting feedback

he fixed it this morning free of charge with me watching him like a hawk, do it right first time is my motto :)

bought him a coke afterwards, just dont like the younger inexpirenced working on my cars, I dont work hard to pay good money for their 'training', if so it should be like the training barber shops and you get a discount at the very least, lol

most mechanic shops dont have a clue about performance honda motors
best to take to specialised honda work shops not honda as they will rape you with labour prices
or even better buy a workshop manual and try it your self
get some basic tools as honda are most metric sizes
exprience is better than paying some one expensive labour costs
and in the end not be happy with the service because you are working on the car yourself
any one with common sense with no mechanical experience can do it

midas always do the shit job~ i got nightmare form them as my old engine browned and replaced in midas, only 3 months later, engine broken down dul to the underdrive pulley bolt loose, and the loose pulley broken the whole cam shaft, i had been complained and back to midas in that 3 working months like 20 times, never fix it, and they ignored me and kick me out the shop, the region manger called me and force me not to tell anyone, still charge me for the fees, freakin sick! they told me " you did it by the saw machine, or u just kick it off~" i asked " how can i kick off and broke the cam shaft by my foot?" they said" maybe u can~" i said show me how? i would love to see your foot rip in 2 peices, then finally, i complained them to consumer affair, they suddenly closed down and which means i cannot chase back anymore.....

the midas located in SA port road before~
p.s the worker in that shop intended to make me believe they are RAA approved, but THEY ARE NOT! SO DO NOT TRUST THEM!

Sorry to hear abotu your experience altong..

After hearing a few stories I wont go back to them, its a shame how they market themselves to be a friendly local mechanic, then just franchise everywhere, which results in HQ loosing touch with their service and end up just being rip off merchants
