Hi All,

I would like to query what is the optimal size of an exhaust for a 1.7L civic. Currently it is a 2" Catback, but I was wondering if this is a little restrictive. I asked my bro, he reckons 2.25" is the best for an engine of my size but there wouldn't be much improvement if I did change it around. I was told 2.5" is too big, and that would cause me lag? I'm just after some comments, and opinions in regards to this. Thanks!

I reckon if you already have a sports 2" on it, leave it and direct the money to other mods. On a stock motor, I doubt there would be much gain going to a 2.25.

Get some headers and maybe a cheap hiflow cat :)

I've already got a X-force 4-1 header, I'm just looking for a downpipe. I know it's illegal to have one without a cat, what are the penalties if caught driving without? And is there much difference if there were no cat, compared to a hi-flow cat? performance and sound? Also, do resonators make much difference to air flow? I'm tossing up between getting a testpipe without resonator or one with it fearing it'll be too loud if I didn't have one? Thanks Nepolian!

$10,000 fine.

For the D17 engine, you won't flow enough to require the 2.25" exhaust. You can spend all that money but the gains will be minimal because it is not an engine designed for high performance.

No cat as per what Aaron said ^^

A decat or test on a D17 would probably not make a noticeable difference. XForce header is good enough. A nice CAI would be nice....otherwise you are quite limited when it comes to bolt ons. U might have to consider saving for an EP3 :)

Thanks for the info! I love EP3R, my bro has got one and I love taking it for a hoon. I wasn't allowed to spend that much money on one so I got the little sister which is the EU3. haha. Anyway, I'm thinking of getting a larger downpipe cos at the moment I'm just running the stock one and I'm assuming it doesn't give the car its full potential even with upgraded header and catback. I know it's not a performance car, but I just want to have some fun making it better than the other Vi's on the road :) Cheers for the responses.

anymore than 2" on a std engine is a waste, only if you have a b18c or a worked 1600cc you can get away with a 2.48" (2.5") system where it will do anything positive

just be mindful of epa emissions and noise dB laws

2' is plenty for the D17 tony, dont waste your money on sumthing that wont give u any gains.

save and get sumthing like coilovers.

than u can hit the track with me and chan

x2, spend it on suspension upgrades or some nice tyres :)

good for mild noise factor, just dont go too big or all you'll get is power loss, emissions increased and droning in your cabin which will eventually piss u off lol

yea i think your comparing apples with apples, 2.25 would not have any difference whatsoever to a 2 inch pipe and i think it would be a waste of money, you need to have some sort of back pressure for the engine to run its best aswell, so maybe look at a high flow cat and leave your 2 inch pipe.

awesome thanks!! what makes a car track ready besides the right suspension. all the bars etc? i only have a rear strut bar atm, no front one yet have to order it. i was thinking of getting koni yellows instead of coilovers and dropping the car on skunk2 springs for a little more drop. what else do i need? are my 18's too big to race on?

just a good set of coilovers/spring and shock combo and any car is ready for track in my mind.

btw what happened to the rear sway bar man didnt u change it over.

yeah engines run brilliantly with back pressure ...... n00b

its 7 grand fine not 10. 10 is just straight pipe no resonators.

if you really dont want a cat, just gut it out. stinks but yeah if you get pulled over your pretty much gone unless you turn the car off straight away lol. especially things like RBT, as soon as the car is at a stop, all you can smell is fuel lol

i used to have a straight pipe and i never got a fine when i got pulled over.

it prob depends on the cop
