View Full Version : Front bumper vibrates at idle?

Just realised that my front bumper vibrates a little at idle while the car is in park. It happens to the extent that you can see the "H" emblem on the grill moving along with the rest of the grill.

Is something loose here or is this normal?

something must be loose... have you ever taken off your bumper before? Any accidents?

Yeah, had a front on accident at the start of the year. Probably something coming loose but just wanted to be sure before I go back to the panel beaters.

does it sound like metal or plastic vibrating? Same thing happened to my gf's cousin's supra... turns out it was just something loose near the intake...

of course its not normal, you dont drive a daihatsu or a hyundai ! you drive a honda!
id suggest u atke the entire front bumper off, and put it back on,

should be a few bolts (2 or more but i tihnk 2) at teh bottom,
2 on each side at the wheel arch, and oepning the bonnet the 5 screws or so there!

Don't actually hear anything. Well I can't hear anything over and above the engine noise.

If it's not normal it will be the job of the insurance company to rectify things.

Then the radiator support is probably slightly bent downwards. The bonnet will be loose and not sitting tight against the radiator support, so it vibrates up and down following engine rpm. That vibration of the bonnet causes the emblem to to bounce up and down too. You can test by adjusting the bonnet bump stops so that it sits further out (turn anticlockwise by a bit) to stop the vibration. Ideally you want to have the front repaired so that it doesn't bend downwards or sag.

Thanks Aaronng. I have had the bonnet vibration problem since the repair and I adjusted the bump stops which fixed that problem. Just recently when I refilled my washer fluid I turned both the stops clockwise inorder to get the bonnet to sit a bit lower and better aligned with the side fenders. Looks like I might have upset the balance. I'll turn the bump stops anticlockwise for the time being and get a spirit level and check the radiator support. Is it meant to be dead level?

Don't need a spirit level. The bump stops are so that the bonnet does not vibrate against the radiator support. So turn it anticlockwise a bit again to get it to stop vibrating. If you find that the bonnet level at which the vibration stops is higher than the fender, then you should repair the radiator support because it does point to sagging from the damage.

Is it also possible that the bump stops are at different heights ie one is higher/lower than the other? When I set the stops I unscrewed them completely, put them back on, then turned them the exact same number of revolutions.

yes it is possible but it doesnt work that way,

as you lift up your bonnet with its stand, it causes the weight to be lifted on one side and the otehrside to sit lower as the weight isnt supported, causing the bonnet to sag over time and become like this, - its only natural. the rubber height things aaron speaks of can/hwioever not always need to be adjusted the same way, just experiment with them, till your happy with both sides.
