On the CL9 Accord Euro there is a big plastic cover on the front underneath side of the car. What is this called and what is its purpose/function?

That's the underbody tray. It is there to ensure that air flows smoothly under the car to reduce the drag coefficient.

sounds like a splash guard... Possibly to protect the engine from things on the road. its the thing I wrecked just today. =\

(but I could be wrong so best to listen to aaronng) =)

Only new ones. The Accords from the 90's didn't have one because fuel efficiency was not critical, just important. There are many cars out there without a splash guard, especially the cheaper city-runabout cars.

Worst case, buy a replacement part from wreckers. Dealer will charge about $300 for it.

Are these things important in the running of the car? or is it just for fuel efficiency?
