safe at all to turn the motor on and shove it into gear while the front end is in the air? i suppose it'd be the same as going up a steep hill on the road i suppose
need to see if anythings loose while trying to diagnose my silly chassis shudder problem

Yeh dont see why it wouldnt be. just make sure

- wheels are chocked properly
- handbrake is on REAL tight
- jacked up properly on proper jack stands

yeah i usually take the proper precautions
just need to whack it into first and let it spin under it's own power to see if anythings unbalanced while rolling

been forever and i still can't figure it out
only shudders/shakes between 2-3.5krpm and in second and third
at that rpm range in first, fourth or fifth it's smooth as
mirrors shake, door trims rattle can't feel a thing through the steering wheel :(

Sounds like my car after I hit a gutter..

Have you got a wheel alignment done to eliminate that possibility? Could be cv's.. steering rack

yeah who knows, i've changed everything up there minus inner/outer tie rods(have them here to be done soon) and lower ball joint on the knuckle(also have them here)

other than that i got no idea what else it could be

no real load on the engine while its in the air...so you cannot possibly replicate it being on the ground/road like that !

vinnY
27-08-2009, 11:26 PM
yeah thats the thing ben.. trying to see if it's only when i have load on it or is it engine/gearbox related
shudders between 2-3.5krpm in second and third gear na-118

does it shutter from front end or rear end? if you don't mind just list the parts you have replaced, and if it's been in any small hits or anything that could cause the shuttering

vinnY

seems like just a front end thing, i've replaced;
front knuckles, both driveshafts and half shaft, lca's and bushes, front shocks, upper control arms, rotors, calipers, pads, caliper bracket

engine mounts are unbroken and in good condition, nfi what else it could be

only shutters when its in gear right? have you made visual inspections around the engine bay, and gearbox?

vinnY
27-08-2009, 11:58 PM
yeah pretty much, just trying to eliminate everything before all fingers point to the diff/lsd
only seems to be noticeable in second and third, if it goes do it in any other gears then i don't notice it

everything looks in place, tried to loosen and retorque numerous things and nothing really helps
sometimes it'd be okay when the engine is cold and i first go down the road but after about a minute or so it's there again

hmm,,, sounds like something relating to the gearbox, can't really pin out where and waht,, but that's what i think

vinnY

yeah i know i've long suspected the gearbox, but i just wanted to fix all the cheap stuff that i'd end up replacing anyway
itr boxes aren't cheap anyhow :p

vinnY

Check wheel bearings for movement in the hub?

vinnY
28-08-2009, 09:35 PM
bearings tight, no noise
4x100 and 4x114.3 setup on it now and both have the same effect so it's not them

MikeyG

sounds like your wheel bearings... i used to have that problem i changed them and nothing since * knocks on wood *

EDIT : just saw its not your wheel bearings

vinnY
29-08-2009, 02:26 AM
yeah gone through 2 knuckle sets, nothing

will be changing them soon either way along with my lower ball joints so we'll see whether it is that sooner or later

MikeyG

how about sussy??? would you think its maybe your sussy????

if it happens in your 2nd n 3rd gear... maybe your sychros need to be changed

vinnY
29-08-2009, 02:37 AM
suspension? probably not
nothing much i can think about other than ball joints

might be the gearbox, trying to get stuff done around it and i'll end up in the gearbox later down the track
