Hi Guys,

I obviously know that you just unscrew a gearknob, but how do you seperate the knob from the leather boot??

It all seems connected via that black plasitc bit under the knob..

I bought a 6spd knob off an S2000, (little shiny stainless steel one), anyone installed one? anything I should know / remove ect..

Thanks peeps
Brendan

i remove the dash part and gear stick to have room to install a aux port (for ipod)
the dash is held down by clips so you have to just prier it up.

not sure if that helps.. i've never wanted to change the knob but i figured u just unscrew it..

Yeah I installed an Xcarlink the other day :) thanks dude,

But I mean, seperating the actual leather boot from the gearknob.. how do you get that part seperated?

Issue is, my gearknob is scratched as, cause I bought it off a female driver, who wore heaps of rings, if my gear "knob" looks like this, I wonder how her husband feels!

just pull the leather boot down. it pops out and you can pop it back in.

Use the search function..this has been covered many times before.

there are 4 clips on each corner holding down the leather boot u have to carefully pull up. to separate the leather boot from gear knob you have to take the gear knob off first then you can slide the leather boot up after prying open

Thanks heaps guys,

So just to re-cover, if I pull down on the boot from the gearknob it will seperate?, but how will the new knob hold it up? or do I have to modify the boot?,

Also, as for search, mate I never post up a thread unless I have failed in Searching,

I checked this forum and didn't find much, and the DIY section has nothing.. as my question is based on seperating the Boot from the knob, not so much removing the actual knob..

Thanks guys for all your help though!

If you change the gearknob, the clips from the OEM boot are quite ugly.... As you can see below, the white piece of plastic is what connects the boot to the knob.... it's held onto the boot with a ziptie

When i first installed my Skunk 2 knob, i cut the ziptie and removed the plastic thing.... now from here people do one of two things... you can ziptie the boot itself to the shift lever from the inside (i tried this but there was a lot of puckering and i didn't like it)... so i sprayed the clip thingie black and mounted it back on the boot but i inverted it so it looked like this:

But i still wasn't a fan, it looked too big and there was part numbers visible so i went and got a Civic Type R shift boot and installed that instead (This is a bitch to do but with some fiddling it fits nicely!) Here's how it ended up looking:

Dude, you have been a fantastic help!! and that looks absolutely perfect!,

As for the 2nd pic with that gap.. I might araldite the clip to the bottom of the knob.. it will look snug up to the knob I guess?

I'd suggest putting a zip tie on the shift lever and use it to hold up the white plastic. Just make sure it's very tight so it doesn't move up or down easily.

I zip tied my leather to the shift lever, but it overlaps and doesn't look that great. Have been meaning to fix it up somehow.

That looks fantastic!! I've got the same problem, the white plastic part shows a lil. Don't like it ! :)
Is that the EK9 Type R shift boot you have used? And how 'fiddly' was the install? what did you have to modify for it to fit?

Thanks,

I gotta upload some pics of mine, I managed to separate the gearknob from the black plastic that holds the leather up, which now sits snuggly up to the knob..

Yes i believe it is the boot from an EK9 (got it from a member here _Ash) OEM though, as it came in the honda packaging!

The big issue i had was that there is far more shift boot than you need, so you'll have a fair bit hanging down below (unless your trim it!) Also, our gear boots are perfectly symmetrical from the side, whereas the TypeR boot kind of leans forward a bit so you have to pull the back through more than the front... Other than that it is just fiddly getting it right fixing it in place and seeing if you've left enough for the shift boot to stay up with the knob through all gears, but not too much so you've got a baggy looking mess.... Took me about 45-and hour all up including pulling out the console piece, removing the old boot and fitting the new one with trial and error for getting it the perfect height.

thought i'd post some pics of my newly installed gear knob. picked it up off ebay for $50 including shipping. never heard of this brand (from NZ) but i thought it looked alright. real carbon fibre weave underneath, with laser engraved stuff.

i did what CivicSi did above and took that white/cream coloured plastic thing off, sprayed it with a primer and some matt black pain. then inverted it. i also put a zip tie underneath on the shift column so that the shift boot will stay up high.
