ok, im too lazy to change the whole intake system as i don't have full exhaust anyway. so put in an K&N filter into stock box on my last filter change.

now. today i was inspecting my filter to see how dirty it is, on the street and drove back home without the filter cover(too lazy to put it back on). and the car goes slightly more powerful and there is significant louder induction sound after 3500-4000 rpm.(a deep lower pitch sound kicks in, definately not VTEC coz it's B18b).

as u can see. with cover on the air for the engine goes down a pipe from the air box to where i show the red arrow is. which is the coolest area in engine bay.

so.. is it ok to use the car without the air filter cover? things im worry about is that the air that goes into the engine will be too hot?

please tell me what u think!

I use mine without any cover.. never overheated and yeh as you said, alot of difference as there is free air flow..has a mad hissing sound at like 4500 rpm, lots more induction

What people do however is do a cover over the top of the pod, just so cops dont hassle you for a filter that is unprotected or whatever

It will sound louder but go not much quicker because you are sucking in hot air.

what filter is that dude?

It looks like a direct replacement for the OEM filter?

I know that, i was just wondering if there was a specific model that has the curved inlet and little piece of rubber at the top to fit directly into the OEM air box.

leave the lid on, take the resonator out and DIY cold air intake feed it

leave the lid on, the small power gain is not worth the defect fine the cops will give you when they see it

That filter is K&N direct replacement of OEM filter, it's a straight cyclinder pod filter with a bent inlet, exactly same as OEM and fits right in(be sure to keep that rubber ring at the bottom end).

Model number KNE2427, got it from robbos for $119, cleaning kit is $25 and enough for 2 good cleans or 3x quick rough cleans.

just done some drives around the town with the air-filter box cover off. in mid day of winter. after the drive i checked the air filter is pretty hot, much hotter than if it had the lid. and that's in winter, imagine in summer. as for power gain..

there was significant power gain in the first 10 minutes...(from engine warmed up till the engine bay warms up) after that.. not much power gain.
so i guess i got the answer

He's right having it exposed isnt making it any faster or more powerful. it is the effect from the noise that you can relate to it going better as it sounds as if its working harder. best thing to do is put cover on and run cai to the box. it will be by far the best option.

on a dc2r there is a dyno proven drop in power by not having the lid on, cant find the link for it atm but ill try, a assume yours would be simmilar

they also dyno with the hood up and not in real driving conditions like when the suns heat and the engines heat builds up in your engine bay like it would driving around during the day.

n yes if you get water in your engine it will f(8k up but that is rare to happen unless your CAI is draging on the ground
its commen sense people.

If you were in a sauna would you want to breath the hot air in a sauna or threw a three inch pipe out in the hall way?

which do you think would be cooler?
