My hi flow cat is dead :( It's making rattling noise for a few days now. Went back to the place where they did my exhaust and said my car was running lean? And it melted the inside of the cat so that's why it's making the rattling noise. They said it's not covered by warranty!

But I went to my friends mechanic and he goes yes the cat is dead and that I should get it replaced coz its covered by warranty :confused: So is it covered by warranty or not? Also did it die out because it was a cruddy cat or because my car was running lean? If so how do I prevent it from happening again? Coz I don't want to pay for a replacement and then it dies out again :(

i wouldn't know the answer to your q'n but it might help if ppl knew the brand? diff brands may have diff warranty conditions...

btw, what's running lean again? more fuel than air??

rich = too much fuel
lean = not enough fuel

do NOT take it off and put a resonator....cops arent that stupid, maybe in adelaide but not here.

And sell off your car to pay the fine!.

I would have thought a car running rich was more likely to kill the cat!

Yeah I don't see how running lean could kill it. Typically cats are killed by running rich or a missfire, because the excess fuel oxidising in the cat causes it to overheat and the core melts.

yeah i thought running rich would be more likely to send flames down your manifold to the cat. Anyways if you disagree with em then call fair trading..

running either lean or rich will destroy your cat.

Too lean , increases internal tempreture - frying it too.

Thanks for the replies guys, now I understand why my cat is stuffed. But now I need to know if its going to happen again? If so how do I prevent it from happening?

mayb take the car and get a "second" opinion....
if ur car is too lean.... o well
if its not, get it on paper, and take it to the exhaust shop.... if they dont accept caal fair trading (and make sure u tell them ur going to call em)
