The only way to do it properly is to completely disassemble the carb and clean every part of it, including all passageways and orifices. It only takes a tiny bit of grunge to stop the carb working properly.

Purchase a kit for your carb (with all the gaskets / needle valve and seat etc). Be organised / be tidy / be clean / pay careful attention to what goes where. Don't force anything. Compressed air is very good for blowing out passageways and jets etc, but you can usually get away with a can of carb cleaner (which is rather toxic...).
